Legion
Legion, a colossal, pulsating mass of eyeballs and flesh, is one of the most visually striking and challenging bosses in Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. Found within the Catacombs, this boss is a test of endurance and strategic targeting, requiring Alucard to break through its defenses by destroying its constituent parts before confronting the core entity.
Legion is located deep within the Catacombs, a sprawling and often confusing area filled with undead enemies and environmental hazards. The boss arena is a large, circular chamber. Upon entering, Alucard will see a massive, spherical entity composed of countless eyeballs. The fight begins with Legion in its dormant state, but it quickly awakens to unleash its devastating attacks.
The core mechanic of the Legion fight is its segmented nature. The boss is comprised of numerous smaller eyeballs that orbit a central, larger mass. These smaller eyeballs are the primary targets. Legion's attacks involve launching volleys of these eyeballs at Alucard, both in a scattered pattern and in concentrated beams. It can also cause the entire structure to spin rapidly, creating a dangerous vortex. The central mass is initially protected and cannot be directly harmed.
To defeat Legion, Alucard must systematically destroy all the orbiting eyeballs. The Cross sub-weapon is exceptionally effective here, as its wide arc and piercing capabilities can hit multiple eyeballs at once. The Axe can also be useful if thrown from a position where it can hit several targets. Alucard's basic attacks are also important for finishing off any stragglers or for dealing damage when hearts are low. It's crucial to keep moving and to prioritize dodging the incoming projectiles.
Once all the smaller eyeballs are destroyed, Legion will enter a vulnerable state. The central mass will open up, revealing a core that can now be attacked. During this phase, Legion's attacks become more desperate, often involving powerful laser beams or a sweeping attack that covers a large portion of the arena. Alucard should capitalize on this opportunity to deal as much damage as possible using his strongest attacks and any remaining sub-weapons. The Holy Water can be effective against the exposed core if Alucard can position himself correctly.
After the central core is destroyed, Legion will finally be defeated. The reward for this arduous battle is typically a sificant amount of experience points and often a key item or a powerful piece of equipment that will aid Alucard in his further exploration of the castle. The path forward through the Catacombs will also be opened, allowing Alucard to progress deeper into the game.
