New Game+ / Post-Game Content
Congratulations, Vampire Hunter! You've navigated the treacherous halls of Dracula's Castle and brought an end to its master's reign. But the night is still young, and Castlevania: Symphony of the Night offers a wealth of content for those who wish to delve deeper, challenge themselves further, or simply experience the adventure anew with Alucard's formidable powers intact.
Starting a New Game+
Upon completing the game and viewing the ending, you'll be prompted to save your clear data. Do so! This clear data is what enables New Game+. When you start a new game from the title screen, select your cleared save file. Alucard will begin his journey with all his previously acquired equipment, items, spells, and most importantly, his current level and stats. This makes the early game significantly easier, allowing you to explore new routes or simply breeze through areas you found challenging before.
- Retained Progress:
- Alucard's Level and Stats
- All Equipment (Weapons, Armor, Accessories)
- All Items (Consumables, Relics, Key Items)
- All Spells and Familiar Levels
- Map Completion Percentage (though you'll need to re-explore to uncover it visually)
- Reset Progress:
- Story Progression and Boss Encounters
- Enemy Drops (you can farm them again!)
- Shop Inventory (will reset to initial offerings)
Post-Game Objectives & Challenges
With Alucard at his peak, New Game+ opens up several avenues for further enjoyment and mastery:
1. 200.6% Map Completion
Achieving 200.6% map completion is the ultimate cartographic challenge in Symphony of the Night. This requires exploring every single tile in both the Normal Castle and the Inverted Castle. Even experienced players often miss small, hidden rooms or single tiles tucked away. Here’s how to ensure you don't miss a spot:
- Methodical Exploration: Systematically clear each room. Use the map screen frequently to identify unrevealed areas.
- Hidden Rooms: Many walls can be broken to reveal secret passages or rooms. Pay attention to suspicious-looking walls or areas that seem to lead nowhere. Common culprits include:
- Marble Gallery: Look for a breakable wall near the entrance to the Outer Wall, leading to a small room with a Life Up.
- Olrox's Quarters: There's a hidden room above the main corridor leading to Olrox, accessible by high-jumping or using the Leap Stone.
- Underground Caverns: Several breakable floors and ceilings hide small alcoves.
- Corner Tiles: Sometimes, only a single corner of a room needs to be touched to register on the map. Fly through every nook and cranny with the Soul of Bat.
- Boss Rooms: Ensure you fully explore the entire extent of every boss arena, even after the boss is defeated.
- Inverted Castle Specifics: The Inverted Castle mirrors the normal one, but some hidden areas might be accessed differently due to gravity.
2. Item & Equipment Collection
While you retain all your gear in New Game+, there are still plenty of rare drops and unique items to hunt down for completionists:
- Rare Enemy Drops: Many enemies have extremely low drop rates for powerful or unique equipment. Examples include:
- Crissaegrim: Dropped by Schmoo in the Forbidden Library (Inverted Castle). This is arguably the best weapon in the game due to its rapid, multi-hit attack. Prepare for a long grind!
- Ring of Varda: Dropped by the Paranthropus in the Catacombs (Inverted Castle). Boosts all stats significantly.
- Shield Rod: Dropped by the Skeletons in the Underground Caverns. Essential for the powerful Shield Rod + Alucard Shield combination.
- Valmanway: Dropped by the Lesser Demon in the Reverse Caverns. Another excellent multi-hit weapon.
- Familiar Leveling: Continue to level up your Familiars (Fairy, Demon, Sword, Ghost, Bat) to their maximum potential. Each Familiar gains new abilities and becomes more effective as it levels up through combat experience.
- Maxing Out Consumables: Stock up on every consumable item to 99, including rare ones like High Potions and Elixirs.
3. Boss Rush Mode (if applicable to your version)
Some versions of Symphony of the Night include a Boss Rush mode, typically accessed from the main menu after clearing the game. This mode challenges you to defeat a series of bosses as quickly as possible. Strategies include:
- Optimal Equipment: Equip your highest damage weapons (e.g., Crissaegrim, Valmanway), powerful accessories (Ring of Varda, Duplicator for item spam), and defensive gear.
- Spell Usage: Don't be shy with spells like Hellfire or Soul Steal for quick damage or healing.
- Familiar Choice: The Sword Familiar can be excellent for additional damage, or the Fairy Familiar for emergency healing.
4. Richter Mode / Maria Mode
Certain versions of Symphony of the Night (e.g., Saturn, PSP, PlayStation 4/Switch ports) allow you to play as Richter Belmont or Maria Renard after completing the game with Alucard. These modes offer a completely different gameplay experience:
- Richter Belmont:
- Playstyle: Focuses on whip combat and classic Castlevania sub-weapons (Axe, Holy Water, Cross, Dagger, Stopwatch).
- Movement: Richter has a unique dash and slide, and his signature Item Crash attacks.
- Strategy: Mastering Richter involves precise platforming, sub-weapon management, and knowing when to use his powerful Item Crashes. He cannot use Alucard's equipment or spells.
- Maria Renard:
- Playstyle: Utilizes animal familiars (cat, phoenix, dragon, turtle) and martial arts.
- Movement: Maria is very agile, with a double jump and a quick dash.
- Strategy: Her familiars offer varied attacks and utility. She also has a powerful Item Crash-like ability. Like Richter, she does not use Alucard's gear.
These additional character modes provide a fresh perspective on the castle's layout and challenges, forcing you to adapt to new combat mechanics and movement sets.
