Familiar Leveling & Abilities
Alucard isn't alone in his quest; he can summon powerful Familiars to aid him in battle and exploration. These loyal companions gain experience and level up alongside Alucard, unlocking new abilities and becoming more effective as they grow. Understanding how to efficiently level your Familiars is key to maximizing their potential.
Familiar Experience & Leveling
Familiars gain experience points (EXP) whenever Alucard defeats an enemy while the Familiar is active. The amount of EXP gained is a percentage of the EXP Alucard receives. To level up your Familiars quickly, focus on areas with high concentrations of easily defeated enemies. The higher a Familiar's level, the more powerful its attacks become, and the more frequently it will use its special abilities.
Optimal Leveling Spots:
- Early Game (Levels 1-20): The Marble Gallery and Outer Wall are excellent for early leveling. Repeatedly clear rooms with Axe Knights, Flea Men, and other low-HP enemies.
- Mid Game (Levels 20-50): The Underground Caverns, specifically the areas with Mermen and Fishheads, provide consistent EXP. The Olrox's Quarters with its numerous Lesser Demons and Werewolves also works well.
- Late Game (Levels 50+): For rapid leveling, head to the Reverse Entrance or Reverse Caverns. The high-HP enemies here yield significant EXP. Equip the Ring of Arcana and Duplicator (if you have them) to maximize item drops and sub-weapon spam for faster clears.
Leveling Strategy:
- Equip the Familiar: Ensure the desired Familiar is equipped in your inventory. Only equipped Familiars gain EXP.
- Find a High-Density Area: Refer to the optimal spots above.
- Clear Rooms Efficiently: Use powerful weapons or spells to quickly dispatch enemies. The faster you clear, the more EXP cycles you complete.
- Repeat: Exit and re-enter rooms to respawn enemies.
- Consider the "Familiar Trick": For the ultimate power leveling, especially for the Fairy and Ghost, consider equipping the Duplicator and spamming a powerful sub-weapon like the Holy Water or Axe in a room with many enemies. The Familiar will gain EXP rapidly from the sheer volume of defeated foes.
Familiar Abilities & Unlocks
Each Familiar possesses unique abilities that unlock as they reach certain level thresholds. These abilities range from offensive attacks to defensive support and even item retrieval.
1. Fairy Familiar:
- Location: Found in the Long Library, in a hidden room above the main library area. Requires the Leap Stone or High Jump relic to reach.
- Abilities:
- Healing: At higher levels, the Fairy will occasionally use healing items (Potions, High Potions, Elixirs) from your inventory to restore Alucard's HP when it drops low. This is incredibly useful for survivability.
- Status Cure: Can cure status ailments like Poison or Curse.
- Item Retrieval: Will retrieve items dropped by enemies that Alucard might miss.
- Secret Detection: Points out breakable walls and hidden passages by flying towards them.
- Best Use: Indispensable for exploration and boss fights due to its healing and secret detection. Prioritize leveling the Fairy early.
2. Bat Familiar:
- Location: Found in the Olrox's Quarters, in a room accessible after defeating Olrox.
- Abilities:
- Sonic Attack: Fires a sonic wave at enemies, dealing moderate damage. Becomes more frequent and powerful with levels.
- Formation Attack: At higher levels, the Bat will join Alucard's bat form during transformations, increasing the damage and number of bats in the swarm.
- Best Use: Good for additional offensive support, especially if you frequently use Alucard's bat form.
3. Ghost Familiar:
- Location: Found in the Alchemy Laboratory, in a secret room near the entrance to the Marble Gallery.
- Abilities:
- Spirit Orb Attack: Fires a slow-moving, homing spirit orb that deals damage to enemies. Damage and frequency increase with level.
- Curse Attack: At higher levels, the Ghost can inflict the Curse status on enemies, preventing them from using special attacks.
- Best Use: Provides consistent, albeit slow, ranged damage. Its Curse ability can be useful against certain annoying enemies or bosses.
4. Demon Familiar:
- Location: Found in the Catacombs, in a hidden room accessible by breaking a floor panel.
- Abilities:
- Fireball Attack: Shoots fireballs at enemies. Becomes more frequent and powerful.
- Bomb Throw: At higher levels, the Demon will throw bombs that explode on impact, dealing area-of-effect damage.
- Switch Activation: Can activate certain floor switches or levers that Alucard cannot reach.
- Best Use: A strong offensive Familiar, particularly useful for its bomb attack and its utility in activating switches for exploration.
5. Sword Familiar:
- Location: Found in the Castle Keep, in a hidden room accessible by activating a switch and then quickly flying through a gate.
- Abilities:
- Sword Attack: Attacks enemies with its blade, dealing physical damage. Damage and attack speed increase with level.
- Sword Skill Learning: This is its most unique ability. At specific levels, the Sword Familiar will "learn" new sword techniques, which Alucard can then perform himself by equipping the Sword Familiar as a weapon (once it reaches Level 50). These skills include powerful slashes and projectile attacks.
- Shield: At very high levels, it can act as a temporary shield, blocking some projectiles.
- Best Use: The most offensively oriented Familiar. Its ability to teach Alucard new sword skills makes it a must-level for players who enjoy melee combat. Leveling it to 50 is a significant undertaking but well worth the effort for its powerful learned techniques.
Choose your Familiars wisely based on your playstyle and current needs. While some players prefer to focus on one or two, fully leveling all of them offers a comprehensive advantage throughout your journey in Dracula's Castle.
