Glitches & Exploits (Optional)

While Castlevania: Symphony of the Night is a masterclass in game design, like many titles of its era, it contains a few interesting glitches and exploits. These can range from minor visual quirks to game-breaking sequence skips or item duplication. Use them at your own discretion; they can certainly enhance speedrunning attempts or simply offer a different way to experience the game.

Item Duplication Glitch (Librarian)

This is arguably the most famous and useful exploit, allowing you to duplicate any consumable item in your inventory, including rare drops and powerful healing items. This can be particularly useful for stocking up on High Potions, Elixirs, or even Power of Sire for tough boss fights.

  1. Prerequisites: You need to have at least one of the item you wish to duplicate and access to the Librarian in the Long Library.
  2. Initiate Conversation: Stand close to the Librarian and press Up to open his shop menu.
  3. Select Item to Sell: Navigate to the "Sell" option. Select the consumable item you want to duplicate.
  4. The Critical Step: While the "Are you sure?" prompt is on screen (asking if you want to sell the item), press and hold the Attack button (Square or Circle, depending on your control scheme) AND the Jump button (X) simultaneously.
  5. Confirm Sale: While still holding Attack and Jump, press Right on the D-pad to select "Yes" and then immediately release all buttons.
  6. Observe the Duplication: If done correctly, Alucard will perform a backdash (due to the Jump + Attack input) and the item will be sold, but its quantity in your inventory will not decrease. Instead, it will often increase by one.
  7. Repeat: You can repeat this process as many times as you like to amass a huge quantity of any consumable item.

Pro Tip: This glitch is timing-sensitive. Practice the simultaneous button press and release. The backdash is your visual cue that you've likely done it correctly.

Sword Brothers Glitch (Early Access/Damage)

This exploit allows you to cast the Sword Brothers spell (requiring the Sword Familiar) much earlier than intended, and under specific conditions, can deal immense damage, sometimes one-shotting bosses.

  1. Prerequisites: You need the Sword Familiar equipped and active. You also need enough MP (30 MP) to cast the spell.
  2. Normal Spell Input: The standard input for Sword Brothers is Down, Down-Forward, Forward, Up-Forward, Up, Down-Up, Down + Attack.
  3. The Glitchy Input: Instead of the full input, perform Down, Down-Forward, Forward, Up-Forward, Up, Down-Up, Down. Crucially, *before* pressing Attack, open your menu (Start).
  4. Menu Manipulation: While in the menu, navigate to your Relics and unequip the Sword Familiar. Then, re-equip it.
  5. Cast the Spell: Exit the menu. Immediately after exiting the menu, press the Attack button.
  6. Result: Alucard should cast Sword Brothers. The glitch occurs because the game briefly "forgets" the MP cost after the menu manipulation, or miscalculates the damage based on an uninitialized state.

Damage Amplification: The truly broken aspect comes from combining this with specific equipment. If you perform the glitch while having the Duplicator equipped (obtained from the Forbidden Library in the Inverted Castle for 500,000 gold), and then quickly unequip and re-equip the Sword Familiar via the menu, the damage output of Sword Brothers can become astronomically high, often exceeding 9999 damage per hit. This can trivialize even the toughest bosses like Galamoth.

Wall Clipping / Out of Bounds

Several areas in the castle allow for Alucard to clip through walls or get out of bounds, often by transforming into Wolf or Bat form at specific pixel-perfect locations. These are generally more for exploration or speedrunning and rarely offer direct gameplay advantages for a casual playthrough, but they can be fun to experiment with.

  • Wolf Form Clip: In certain narrow passages or corners, transforming into the Wolf Form (requires Soul of Wolf relic) and immediately back to Alucard can sometimes push Alucard through a thin wall or floor. This is highly situational and requires precise positioning.
  • Bat Form Clip: Similarly, using the Bat Form (requires Soul of Bat relic) in tight spaces, especially near ceilings or corners, can sometimes allow Alucard to phase through geometry. This is often used in speedruns to skip entire sections of the castle. For instance, some You can clip through the ceiling in the Outer Wall to bypass the normal progression.

Note: Mastering these wall clips requires significant practice and understanding of the game's collision detection. You might find yourself stuck out of bounds, requiring a soft reset or a Library Card to escape.
