Collectibles & Secrets Checklist
Welcome, intrepid vampire hunter! This comprehensive guide will lead you through every hidden nook and cranny of Castlevania, ensuring you uncover every valuable collectible and secret the castle holds. Mastering these locations is crucial for maximizing your power, securing extra lives, and ultimately, defeating Dracula.
Unlike later entries in the series, the classic Castlevania games (NES, Game Boy, SNES, etc.) focus on simpler, yet equally vital, collectibles. These primarily include:
- Money Bags: Essential for purchasing items from the merchant (if available) or simply boosting your score.
- Hearts: Not for health, but for fueling your powerful sub-weapons.
- 1-Ups: Extra lives are invaluable in the challenging world of Castlevania.
- Sub-Weapons: Crucial tools like the Axe, Holy Water, Cross, Dagger, and Stopwatch, each with unique utility.
- Hidden Passages & Breakable Walls: Often leading to shortcuts, extra items, or secret rooms.
- Power-Ups: Double/Triple Shot for sub-weapons, invincibility potions, and more.
This guide will focus on the original Castlevania (NES) as the foundational classic platformer, with general principles applicable across many 2D entries.
Stage 1: The Castle Gates & Courtyard
Your journey begins outside Dracula's Castle, a relatively straightforward stage designed to introduce core mechanics.
Hidden Money Bags & Hearts
- Money Bag (500 points): Immediately after entering the castle proper, in the first room with Zombies, destroy the second candle from the left on the upper platform.
- Large Heart (5 hearts): In the same room, after dropping down, destroy the candle near the bottom-right corner.
- Money Bag (500 points): After the first set of stairs, in the area with the first Merman, destroy the candle on the small platform above the water.
- Money Bag (1000 points): In the area with the two Bone Towers, climb the stairs and destroy the candle on the upper-left platform.
Sub-Weapon Locations
- Axe: Often found early in this stage. Destroy candles or enemies until it drops. Its arc makes it excellent for enemies above or below.
- Holy Water: Can also appear early. Drops from candles. Throws a flame that burns on the ground, damaging enemies.
Secret Passages & 1-Ups
- Hidden Wall (Money Bag - 2000 points): After the first Merman encounter, before the long staircase leading up, hit the wall on the right side of the screen repeatedly with your whip. It will break, revealing a hidden room with a large money bag.
- 1-Up: In the area with the two Bone Towers, after climbing the stairs, jump onto the upper-left platform. Whip the wall to the left repeatedly. A hidden 1-Up will appear. This is crucial for early game survival.
Strategy Tips
- Prioritize getting a sub-weapon early. The Axe is excellent for the Bone Towers.
- Practice whipping candles from a distance to safely collect items.
- Watch out for the Mermen's projectiles when crossing water.
Stage 2: The Castle Interior & Dungeon
This stage introduces more complex platforming and tougher enemies.
Hidden Money Bags & Hearts
- Money Bag (500 points): In the first room with the Flea Men, destroy the candle on the upper platform.
- Large Heart (5 hearts): After the first set of descending stairs, in the room with the Medusa Heads, destroy the candle on the lower-right platform.
- Money Bag (1000 points): In the dungeon area, after dropping into the water, destroy the candle on the small platform to the left.
Sub-Weapon Locations
- Cross: Often found in this stage. Destroys all on-screen minor enemies and returns like a boomerang, hitting enemies twice. Invaluable for boss fights.
- Dagger: A fast, straight-shooting projectile. Good for quick damage but less versatile than the Axe or Cross.
Secret Passages & 1-Ups
- Hidden Wall (Money Bag - 2000 points): In the room with the first set of descending stairs and Medusa Heads, whip the bottom-left wall repeatedly. It will reveal a hidden room with a large money bag.
- 1-Up: In the dungeon area with the large water pit and Mermen, after dropping down, head to the far left. Whip the wall repeatedly to reveal a hidden 1-Up.
Boss Strategy: Bat
- The Bat is a relatively simple boss. It flies in a predictable pattern.
- Recommended Sub-Weapon: Axe or Cross. The Axe can hit it when it's high, and the Cross can deal consistent damage.
- Strategy: Stand your ground and whip it as it swoops down. If you have the Cross, throw it and then whip as it returns.
Stage 3: The Catacombs & Underground Waterway
This stage is notorious for its Medusa Heads and tricky jumps.
Hidden Money Bags & Hearts
- Money Bag (500 points): In the first room with the Bone Pillars, destroy the candle on the upper platform.
- Large Heart (5 hearts): After the first vertical shaft with Medusa Heads, destroy the candle on the platform to the right.
- Money Bag (1000 points): In the waterway section with the Fishmen, destroy the candle on the small island in the middle.
Sub-Weapon Locations
- Stopwatch: Can be found here. Freezes all minor enemies on screen for a short duration. Extremely useful for bypassing difficult sections or setting up attacks. Requires a lot of hearts.
Secret Passages & 1-Ups
- Hidden Wall (Invincibility Potion): In the room with the first Bone Pillars, whip the top-right wall repeatedly. It will reveal an Invincibility Potion, which can be very helpful for the upcoming Medusa Head sections.
- 1-Up: In the vertical shaft filled with Medusa Heads, near the top, whip the left wall repeatedly. A hidden 1-Up will appear. This requires precise timing to avoid falling.
Boss Strategy: Medusa
- Medusa is a challenging boss due to her petrifying gaze and flying snake heads.
- Recommended Sub-Weapon: Cross or Holy Water. The Cross can hit her multiple times, and Holy Water can stun her if thrown correctly.
- Strategy: Medusa moves horizontally across the top of the screen. She periodically descends and fires snake heads. The key is to avoid her gaze (which turns you to stone) and her snake heads. Jump and whip her head when she's low enough. If you have Holy Water, throw it at her feet when she descends to stun her, then get hits in. The Cross is also effective for its consistent damage.
Stage 4: The Clock Tower & Castle Keep
This stage features the dreaded Flea Men and Axe Armors, requiring careful movement.
Hidden Money Bags & Hearts
- Money Bag (500 points): In the first room with the Flea Men and Axe Armors, destroy the candle on the upper-left platform.
- Large Heart (5 hearts): After climbing the first set of gears in the clock tower, destroy the candle on the platform to the right.
- Money Bag (1000 points): In the room with the multiple Axe Armors guarding stairs, destroy the candle on the platform above the second set of stairs.
Sub-Weapon Locations
- All sub-weapons can potentially drop, but the Cross and Axe remain highly recommended for this stage.
Secret Passages & 1-Ups
- Hidden Wall (Money Bag - 2000 points): In the room with the first Flea Men and Axe Armors, whip the bottom-right wall repeatedly. It will reveal a hidden room with a large money bag.
- 1-Up: In the clock tower section with the moving gears, near the top, whip the right wall repeatedly. A hidden 1-Up will appear. Timing your jumps to reach it is crucial.
Boss Strategy: Frankenstein's Monster & Igor
- This duo can be tough. Frankenstein's Monster walks slowly but takes many hits, while Igor jumps around erratically and throws projectiles.
- Recommended Sub-Weapon: Holy Water or Cross. Holy Water can stun Frankenstein, making him easy prey. The Cross can hit both enemies.
- Strategy: Focus on Igor first, as his erratic movements and projectiles are more dangerous. Use your whip to hit him when he lands. Once Igor is down, Frankenstein becomes much easier. Throw Holy Water at Frankenstein to stun him, then get several whip hits in. Repeat until he is defeated. Keep your distance from Frankenstein's slow but powerful attacks.
Stage 5: Dracula's Chambers Approach
The penultimate stage, filled with powerful enemies and environmental hazards.
Hidden Money Bags & Hearts
- Money Bag (500 points): In the first room with the Bone Dragons, destroy the candle on the upper platform.
- Large Heart (5 hearts): After the first set of descending stairs, in the room with the Vultures, destroy the candle on the lower-right platform.
- Money Bag (1000 points): In the final corridor leading to Dracula, destroy the candle near the entrance.
Sub-Weapon Locations
- Ensure you have your preferred sub-weapon (Cross or Holy Water are ideal) and plenty of hearts before facing Dracula.
Secret Passages & 1-Ups
- Hidden Wall (Invincibility Potion): In the room with the first Bone Dragons, whip the top-left wall repeatedly. It will reveal an Invincibility Potion, useful for pushing through tough sections.
- 1-Up: In the room with the Vultures and the collapsing bridge, near the end of the bridge, whip the right wall repeatedly. A hidden 1-Up will appear. Be quick before the bridge collapses!
Boss Strategy: The Grim Reaper (Death)
- Death is one of the most challenging bosses in the game. He teleports around and summons scythes that fly in complex patterns.
- Recommended Sub-Weapon: Cross or Holy Water. The Cross can hit him multiple times as it flies, and Holy Water can stun him briefly.
- Strategy: Death teleports frequently. When he appears, he will summon two scythes that fly in a figure-eight pattern. The key is to learn the scythe patterns and find safe spots. When Death is visible, hit him with your whip or sub-weapon. The Cross is excellent here as it can hit him even if he teleports away. Holy Water can be used to stun him when he appears, allowing for quick damage. Stay calm, avoid the scythes, and chip away at his health.
Stage 6: Dracula's Throne Room & Final Battle
The ultimate confrontation. Prepare for a multi-stage boss fight.
Hidden Money Bags & Hearts
- There are very few, if any, hidden items in this final stage, as it's primarily a boss rush. Focus on survival.
Sub-Weapon Locations
- This is your last chance to grab a sub-weapon from a candle before the fight. Make sure you have the Cross or Holy Water and max hearts.
Secret Passages & 1-Ups
- No hidden passages or 1-Ups in this final, linear stage.
Boss Strategy: Dracula (Phase 1)
- Dracula's first form teleports around the room and shoots three fireballs in a spread pattern.
- Recommended Sub-Weapon: Cross or Holy Water.
- Strategy: Dracula always teleports to one of three locations: left, center, or right. He is vulnerable when he materializes. Hit him with your whip or sub-weapon immediately. The Cross is fantastic here as it can hit him multiple times. Holy Water can be thrown at his feet when he appears to stun him. The fireballs are predictable; jump over the lower ones and duck under the higher ones. Stay aggressive but prioritize dodging.
Boss Strategy: Dracula (Phase 2 - Bat Form)
- After defeating his first form, Dracula transforms into a giant bat. This form is much larger and flies around the room, occasionally swooping down.
- Recommended Sub-Weapon: Cross or Axe.
- Strategy: The Bat form is vulnerable in its head. It flies in a somewhat erratic pattern, but generally swoops down. Use your whip to hit its head when it's low enough. The Cross can be thrown to hit it multiple times as it flies, and the Axe can be used to hit it when it's higher up. Stay on the ground and jump to hit its head. Avoid touching its body, as it deals significant damage. This phase is often considered easier than the first if you have a good sub-weapon.
General Collectible & Secret Hunting Tips
- Whip Everything: The most fundamental rule in Castlevania. Whip every candle, every block, and every suspicious-looking wall. Many secrets are revealed by simply attacking them.
- Sound Cues: In some Castlevania titles, a distinct sound effect plays when you hit a hidden item or breakable wall. Pay attention!
- Environmental Anomalies: Look for blocks that seem out of place, cracks in walls, or platforms that don't quite align with the rest of the architecture.
- Revisit Areas (Later Games): While less applicable to the linear NES Castlevania, later titles (like Symphony of the Night or Aria of Sorrow) heavily feature backtracking with new abilities to access previously unreachable areas.
- Item Drops: Enemies and candles drop items randomly, but some items (like sub-weapons) have higher chances in certain areas or from specific enemy types. If you need a specific sub-weapon, keep destroying candles and enemies until it appears.
- Double/Triple Shot: These power-ups are rare but incredibly powerful. They allow you to throw two or three sub-weapons at once, dramatically increasing your damage output. Always prioritize picking these up if you have a good sub-weapon.
- Invisible Blocks: Some Castlevania games feature invisible blocks that appear when whipped. While less common in the original NES game, it's a staple of the series.
By diligently following this checklist and employing these search strategies, you'll unearth every secret Castlevania has to offer, transforming Simon Belmont into an unstoppable force against the darkness!
