Scoring System & High Scores
While Castlevania is primarily about survival and vanquishing Dracula, a keen eye on your score can elevate your game from mere completion to true mastery. High scores are a testament to efficient monster slaying, item collection, and swift progression. Understanding how points are awarded and strategically maximizing them can be a fun challenge for seasoned players.
Earning Points: The Basics
Points are primarily earned through defeating enemies and collecting certain items. Every enemy in Castlevania has a set point value, and these values can vary significantly. Generally, more challenging enemies or those that appear less frequently will yield higher scores.
Enemy Point Values (Examples):
- Zombie: A meager 100 points. You'll encounter these frequently, so while individually low, they add up.
- Merman: 200 points. Often found in aquatic areas, their projectile attacks make them slightly more dangerous.
- Bat: 300 points. These flying nuisances are quick but offer a decent return for their threat.
- Black Knight: A respectable 1000 points. These heavily armored foes require careful timing to defeat.
- Medusa Head: 400 points. Their erratic flight patterns can be tricky, but they're worth the effort.
Item Point Values:
Beyond enemies, certain items scattered throughout Dracula's Castle also contribute to your score:
- Small Heart: 100 points. These are crucial for using your sub-weapons, but also provide a small score boost.
- Large Heart: 400 points. A more significant boost to your sub-weapon ammunition and score.
- Money Bags: These come in various sizes and are a primary source of bonus points.
- Small Money Bag: 400 points.
- Medium Money Bag: 700 points.
- Large Money Bag: 1000 points. Often hidden or found in breakable blocks.
- Rosary: 1000 points. This screen-clearing item not only saves you from hordes but also rewards you handsomely.
- Invisibility Potion: 1000 points. While primarily for evasion, it also adds to your score.
- Cross: 2000 points. A powerful sub-weapon that also grants a substantial score bonus upon collection.
- Crown: 2000 points. A rare and valuable find, often hidden in secret locations.
Strategic Scoring: Maximizing Your Total
To truly climb the high score ranks, you need to go beyond simply defeating every enemy. Here are some advanced strategies:
1. Clear Every Screen:
While tempting to rush, take the time to defeat every enemy on a screen before moving on. Even low-value enemies contribute to your overall total. This is especially important in early levels like Level 1, where Zombie and Merman kills are plentiful.
2. Seek Out Hidden Items:
Many valuable items, particularly Large Money Bags and Crowns, are concealed within breakable blocks or walls. Always whip suspicious-looking blocks. For instance, in Level 1, after the first set of stairs, whip the wall to the right to reveal a hidden Large Money Bag.
3. Utilize Sub-Weapons for Efficiency:
While sub-weapons consume hearts, they can often clear enemies more efficiently, allowing you to progress faster and potentially earn more points from time bonuses. The Axe, for example, can hit multiple enemies, and the Holy Water can stun and damage ground-based foes.
4. Time Bonus at Stage End:
At the end of each stage, you receive a time bonus. The faster you complete a stage, the higher this bonus will be. This means balancing thorough enemy clearing with swift progression. Don't dawdle unnecessarily.
5. Boss Battle Strategy:
Defeating bosses also awards significant points. While the primary goal is survival, try to defeat them as quickly as possible to maximize your time bonus for the stage. For example, against the Bat in Level 1, a well-timed Axe throw can end the fight swiftly.
6. Life Bonus:
Upon completing the game, you receive a bonus for each remaining life. While not directly tied to in-game actions, preserving your lives throughout your run is crucial for a top score.
The High Score Screen
After a Game Over or successfully defeating Dracula, you'll be presented with the high score screen. Your score will be displayed alongside the top contenders. Aim to see your name (or initials) etched into Castlevania history!
- Initial Entry: If your score is high enough, you'll be prompted to enter three initials.
- Persistence is Key: Don't be discouraged by initial low scores. Castlevania rewards practice and memorization. Each run provides an opportunity to refine your strategies and improve your score.
