Mastering the controls is key to survival in Children of Mana. The game utilizes a well-designed button configuration for combat and menu navigation. Here's a breakdown:

  • L Button: Opens the Ring Menu for item selection. Press Y to ass an item to a quick slot.
  • R Button: Opens the Ring Menu for weapon selection. Press the corresponding button (X or A) to ass a weapon to a quick slot.
  • A and X Buttons: Primary and secondary weapon attack buttons. Hold either button to perform a focused attack.
  • Y Button: Use the currently assed item.
  • B Button: Cancel in menus. Hold B to cast magic spells.
  • Start Button: Brings up the option to use a Magic Rope, allowing you to return to the Mana Village from any dungeon.
  • Select Button: Activates Fury mode when your Fury meter is full.

In town, the controls are simpler: Start for the menu, A to talk, and B to cancel. The bottom screen of your DS displays vital information during gameplay, including an overhead map with Gleamdrop and Gleampool locations, experience points to the next level, and your equipped elemental spirit's spells. While the touch screen can be used for menu navigation and item/weapon selection, the D-pad and button controls are generally more efficient for gameplay.
