Shields in Children of the Sun come in various forms, each offering different defensive capabilities and stat bonuses. They are typically equipped in the off-hand slot and are available to certain character archetypes, most notably the Warrior. The primary function of a shield is to block incoming physical attacks. When an attack is blocked, the damage taken is significantly reduced, or in some cases, completely negated. The effectiveness of a block is determined by the shield's Block Chance and Block Value. Higher block chance means you're more likely to successfully block an attack, while a higher block value means more damage is absorbed when a block occurs. Beyond blocking, shields often provide passive bonuses to stats such as Armor Rating, Health, and Resistances (e.g., fire resistance, arcane resistance). Some rarer shields might even offer unique effects, such as reflecting a portion of incoming damage back to the attacker or granting a small chance to stun enemies on block.
