Tech Points & Learning New Abilities
In Chrono Trigger, characters learn new abilities not solely through leveling up, but also by accumulating 'Tech Points' (TP) and using their existing skills. This system encourages strategic combat and rewards players for engaging with their characters' unique skill sets, leading to more powerful party combinations and devastating attacks.
While leveling up increases a character's base stats like HP, ATK, and DEF, the learning of new Tech Skills is primarily driven by the use of existing abilities and the accumulation of Tech Points (TP). TP is gained after battles, similar to experience points, and is used to power certain Techs. However, the unlocking of new Techs is tied to a character's overall usage of their abilities.
The process of learning new abilities involves:
- Gaining TP: Characters earn TP after each battle, which contributes to their overall progression.
- Using Tech Skills: The most crucial factor is the repeated use of a character's learned Tech Skills in combat. The game tracks how often specific skills are used.
- Unlocking New Techs: After a certain number of uses or a specific TP threshold is reached for a character, new, more powerful Tech Skills will become available for them to learn.
- Dual and Triple Techs: These advanced abilities require specific party members to be present and to have learned prerequisite individual Techs. Their discovery often happens organically as characters use their skills together.
Example Progression:
| Character | Initial Techs | Subsequent Techs | Potential Dual/Triple Techs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Crono | Slash | Cyclone, Confuse, Luminaire | X-Strike (with Frog), Delta Force (with Frog & Lucca) |
| Lucca | Fire, Flame Toss | Flame Whirl, Robo-Toss, Megalaser | Fire Whirl (with Frog), Robo-Toss (with Robo) |
Players are encouraged to experiment with different party compositions and to consistently use their characters' abilities to unlock the full potential of their offensive and defensive capabilities.
