Your party consists of three active members chosen from a roster of unique characters. Each character learns individual 'Techs' (special abilities) by accumulating Tech Points (TP). TP is earned at the end of every successful encounter; while standard enemies grant fixed amounts (usually 1–10 TP), boss battles provide significant surges that can unlock multiple abilities at once. Unlike Experience Points, TP is not split among the party; every active member receives the full amount listed at the end of a fight.
The system's true depth lies in 'Dual' and 'Triple Techs.' When multiple characters have their ATB gauges full and possess compatible abilities, they can combine for massive damage. Early in the game, pairing Crono and Lucca unlocks 'Flame Whirl,' a potent area-of-effect fire attack, while Crono and Marle can use 'Aura Whirl' to provide essential party-wide healing. Experimenting with synergies is vital for late-game success.
