Basic Attacks & Defenses

Chrono Trigger's combat system is built upon a foundation of basic attacks and defenses, enhanced by its unique Active Time Battle (ATB) system. Understanding how these core mechanics work is essential for any player looking to succeed in battle.

In combat, characters have their own ATB gauges that fill over time. When a gauge is full, the character can act. This includes performing basic physical attacks, using items, or unleashing special Techs. Defensively, characters have stats that influence how much damage they take and their ability to avoid attacks.

Understanding Basic Attacks:

  • Physical Attacks: Each character can perform a standard physical attack by selecting the 'Attack' command. The damage dealt is primarily determined by the character's Attack (ATK) stat and the power of their equipped weapon.
  • Accuracy and Evasion: Attacks have a chance to hit or miss based on the attacker's Hit (HIT) stat and the defender's Evade (EVD) stat.
  • Critical Hits: Occasionally, a physical attack can result in a critical hit, dealing significantly more damage.

Understanding Defenses:

  • Defense Stat (DEF): This stat reduces the amount of damage taken from physical attacks. Higher DEF means less damage received.
  • Magic Defense (MDEF): While not a separate stat, a character's Magic stat often influences their resistance to magical attacks, though this is less pronounced than physical defense.
  • Blocking/Guarding: Unlike some RPGs, Chrono Trigger doesn't have a dedicated 'block' command. Defense is primarily stat-based and influenced by evasion.
  • Status Effects: Enemies can inflict negative status effects (like Poison, Slow, or Confusion) that impair a character's ability to fight effectively. These can often be cured with items or specific Techs.

Mastering the timing of attacks and understanding how to mitigate damage through equipment and character stats are key to surviving Chrono Trigger's challenging encounters.
