Shops & Merchants
Throughout your journey across time, you'll encounter various shops and merchants offering essential gear, restorative items, and powerful upgrades. Knowing where to find the best deals and crucial equipment is key to overcoming Chrono Trigger's challenges. This section details the significant shopping opportunities and strategic purchasing advice.
Early Game Essentials (Present - 1000 AD)
Your initial shopping experiences will be centered around Truce and Porre. Focus on acquiring basic healing items and incremental weapon/armor upgrades.
- Truce Village Market: This is your first major shopping hub.
- Items to Prioritize: Stock up on Potions and a few Ethers. Potions are your bread and butter for HP recovery in early battles.
- Weapon/Armor Upgrades: Purchase the Bronze Edge for Crono, Bronze Helm, and Bronze Vest for your party members as soon as possible. These provide a significant defensive boost over starting gear.
- Strategy: After completing the Millennial Fair and before heading to Guardia Castle, ensure your party is well-equipped. Grind a few battles in the Truce Canyon if you need extra G.
- Porre Village Shop: Accessible after the Guardia Castle events.
- Items to Prioritize: Continue to stock Potions. You might consider a few Mid Ethers if you're struggling with MP management, but they are expensive at this stage.
- Weapon/Armor Upgrades: Look for the Iron Sword for Crono, Iron Helm, and Iron Vest. These are direct upgrades to your Bronze gear.
- Strategy: Porre becomes important for restocking before heading into the Cathedral. Don't overspend here, as better gear will become available relatively soon.
Mid-Game Power Spikes (Various Eras)
As you progress, new eras will open up, offering more advanced equipment. Pay close attention to these shops to keep your party competitive.
- Medina Village (600 AD): This unique shop offers some interesting items.
- Items to Prioritize: The prices here are inflated due to the fiend merchant's disdain for humans. Avoid buying basic items unless absolutely necessary.
- Weapon/Armor Upgrades: You'll find the Steel Sword for Crono and Steel Helm/Vest. While these are good, consider if the price is worth it, as you might find similar strength gear for free or cheaper elsewhere soon.
- Strategy: The primary reason to visit Medina's shop is often to sell items for G, as their buying prices for your loot can be surprisingly generous.
- Choras Village (600 AD): After certain story events, this village becomes a valuable resource.
- Items to Prioritize: Stock up on Mid Potions and Mid Ethers. These will be your standard healing items for a good portion of the mid-game.
- Weapon/Armor Upgrades: Look for the Slasher for Crono, Mirage Hand for Marle, and Lode Sword for Frog. For armor, the Titan Vest and Titan Helm are solid choices.
- Strategy: Choras is an excellent place to prepare before tackling significant dungeons like the Denadoro Mountains. Ensure all active party members have the best available equipment.
Late Game & Optimal Gear
Towards the latter half of the game, shops will offer powerful, often expensive, equipment. Prioritize these upgrades for your main party.
- Kajar (Prehistory - 65,000,000 BC): Located in the Reptite Lair, this shop becomes available after certain events.
- Items to Prioritize: Focus on Full Potions and Full Ethers. These are crucial for sustained dungeon crawling.
- Weapon/Armor Upgrades: The Stone Edge for Crono, Stone Bow for Marle, and Stone Arm for Robo are significant upgrades. For armor, the Ruby Vest and Ruby Helm offer excellent defense.
- Strategy: Kajar is vital for outfitting your team before facing the more challenging prehistoric threats. Don't skimp on defense here.
- Black Omen Shops (Various Eras): As the Black Omen appears, you can access shops within it in different time periods.
- Items to Prioritize: These shops offer the highest tier of consumables, including Elixirs and MegaElixirs. Stock up, but be mindful of their high cost.
- Weapon/Armor Upgrades: This is where you'll find some of the best non-unique equipment in the game, such as the Kali Blade for Crono, Siren for Marle, and Dragon Arm for Robo. For armor, the Moon Armor and Moon Helm are top-tier.
- Strategy: The Black Omen shops are your final opportunity to purchase standard equipment before the endgame. Prioritize weapons for your main damage dealers and defensive gear for everyone. Consider selling older, less powerful accessories or weapons to fund these purchases.
