Guardia Castle & Cathedral
Your journey into the past begins abruptly in 600 A.D., a stark contrast to the festive atmosphere of the Millennial Fair. Upon arrival, your immediate objective is Guardia Castle, a familiar landmark yet centuries removed from Crono's time. This section will guide you through the initial events at the castle and the subsequent investigation of the Cathedral, culminating in your first significant boss encounter.
Guardia Castle (600 A.D.)
Upon entering Guardia Castle, you'll find yourself in a rather awkward situation. Marle, due to her striking resemblance to the missing Queen Leene, is mistaken for the monarch. This leads to a brief, albeit tense, reunion with the King. However, the respite is short-lived as the true Queen Leene is revealed to have been kidnapped. The trail of the kidnappers leads north, eventually pointing towards the ominous Northern Ruins, which serve as a gateway to the Cathedral.
Key Objectives at Guardia Castle:
- Witness the mistaken identity: Observe the cutscene where Marle is confused for Queen Leene.
- Learn about Queen Leene's disappearance: Speak with the King and other NPCs to gather information.
- Obtain initial clues: The castle guards will point you towards the Northern Ruins.
Important Note: While in Guardia Castle, take a moment to speak with all accessible NPCs. Some provide minor lore details, while others might offer hints about the upcoming challenges. There are no immediate items to collect within the castle itself at this point, but it's good practice to explore thoroughly.
Northern Ruins & Cathedral Approach
Exiting Guardia Castle to the north will lead you to the Northern Ruins. These ruins are not a dungeon in themselves but rather a pathway to the Cathedral. The path is linear and relatively safe, though you may encounter a few weak enemies. Use this opportunity to get accustomed to the combat system if you haven't already.
Enemies in Northern Ruins:
- Blue Imp: Weak physical attackers. Easily dispatched.
- Rattler: Similar to Blue Imps, pose little threat.
Proceed through the ruins until you reach the entrance to the Cathedral. Be prepared, as this marks your first true dungeon experience in Chrono Trigger.
The Cathedral Dungeon
The Cathedral is a multi-floor dungeon filled with various enemies, traps, and hidden passages. It's crucial to explore every corner to collect valuable items and avoid unnecessary backtracking. The atmosphere is eerie, hinting at the dark magic at play.
Recommended Party Setup:
- Crono: Your primary damage dealer. Focus on physical attacks and Cyclone for groups.
- Marle: Essential for healing with Aura. Keep her HP up.
- Lucca: Provides fire-based magic (Flame Toss) for elemental weaknesses and ranged damage.
Walkthrough & Item Locations:
- Entrance Hall: Upon entering, you'll notice the eerie silence. Head north.
- First Floor (West Wing):
- Go west from the entrance. You'll encounter several enemies disguised as nuns.
- Treasure: In a small room to the northwest, find a Bronze Helm.
- Treasure: In a room to the southwest, discover a Bronze Mail.
- First Floor (East Wing):
- Head east from the entrance. More disguised nuns await.
- Treasure: In a room to the southeast, collect a Maiden's Suit (equip on Marle).
- Treasure: In a room to the northeast, find a Potion.
- Central Chamber & Staircase:
- After clearing both wings, proceed to the central chamber. You'll find a staircase leading down.
- Pitfall Warning: Be wary of floor tiles that might collapse, dropping you to the basement. While not immediately dangerous, it forces a detour.
- Basement (Optional Detour/Required Path):
- If you fall through a pitfall, you'll land here. Otherwise, you'll eventually need to come down.
- Treasure: In a hidden alcove, locate a Mid Ether.
- Puzzle: You'll encounter a room with several switches. The correct sequence is usually hinted at by enemy placement or subtle environmental cues. Experiment, or simply try pressing the switches in a logical order (e.g., left to right, or based on enemy positions). The goal is to open the path forward.
- Second Floor:
- Ascend the stairs from the central chamber or the basement.
- Treasure: In a room to the north, obtain a Shelter.
- Event: You'll eventually find Queen Leene, but it's a trap! This triggers the boss fight.
Enemies in the Cathedral:
- Diablos: These are the "nuns" you'll encounter. They use physical attacks and occasionally cast low-level magic.
- Vampire: Bat-like creatures, often found in groups. They can inflict status effects.
- Gargoyle: Stone statues that come to life. They have higher defense.
- Henchmen: Generic human enemies, usually accompanying Diablos.
Common Pitfall: The most common mistake is rushing through without collecting all items. The equipment found here (Bronze Helm, Bronze Mail, Maiden's Suit) provides a significant defensive boost for your party, which is crucial for the upcoming boss battle.
Boss Battle: Yakra
After discovering the fake Queen Leene, you'll be confronted by the true mastermind behind the kidnapping: Yakra. This demonic creature is your first major boss encounter and requires a solid strategy.
Yakra's Stats & Weaknesses:
| HP | Weakness | Resistance | Absorbs |
|---|---|---|---|
| 920 | Fire, Shadow | Lightning | None |
Yakra's Attacks:
- Needle Spin: A physical attack that hits a single target for moderate damage.
- Counter Attack: Yakra will often counter physical attacks with a stronger Needle Spin.
- Poison: Can inflict the Poison status on a single target.
Recommended Strategy:
- Focus on Fire Damage: Yakra is weak to Fire. Have Lucca spam Flame Toss as much as possible.
- Heal with Marle: Marle's Aura is your primary healing spell. Keep Crono and Lucca's HP high, especially after Yakra's counter-attacks.
- Crono's Role: Crono should primarily use his Techs. Cyclone is good for consistent damage, but be mindful of Yakra's counter. If you have enough MP, use Lightning, though it's not as effective as Fire. Consider using physical attacks only when Lucca needs to conserve MP or Marle is busy healing.
- Manage MP: Use Ethers if your party members are running low on MP, especially Lucca.
- Status Effects: If a character is poisoned, use a Panacea or Marle's Antidote Tech (if learned).
- Defensive Gear: Ensure Crono has the Bronze Helm and Bronze Mail, and Marle has the Maiden's Suit. This will significantly reduce incoming damage.
Post-Battle Rewards:
- Experience Points: A significant boost for your party.
- Technical Points: Essential for learning new Techs.
- Gold: A decent sum to purchase new gear.
- Access to the next area: Defeating Yakra clears the path to continue your adventure.
After defeating Yakra, you'll rescue the real Queen Leene and uncover more about the mysterious events unfolding in 600 A.D. Your success here sets the stage for further time-traveling adventures.
