Team Building & Group Content

While Paragon City and the Rogue Isles offer plenty of opportunities for solo heroism (or villainy!), the true depth of City of Heroes shines when you team up with others. From challenging missions to epic Task Forces, group content is where you’ll earn the best rewards, face the toughest foes, and forge lasting alliances. This guide will walk you through the essentials of team building and conquering group content.

Forming a Team: The Basics

Before diving into the action, understanding how to assemble an effective team is crucial. A balanced team composition can make the difference between glorious victory and a humiliating defeat.

  • Inviting Players: To invite another player to your team, target them and type /invite or right-click their character portrait and select "Invite to Team." They must be within a certain range to receive the invite.
  • Team Size: Standard teams can hold up to 8 players. For most content, a full team is recommended, especially on higher difficulty settings.
  • Team Leader: You who forms the team is initially the Team Leader. They can promote another player to leader by right-clicking their portrait and selecting "Promote to Leader." The leader controls mission selection, difficulty settings, and team disbandment.
  • Communication: Use the /team chat channel (or simply /t) to coordinate strategies, call out targets, and share information. Good communication is key!

Essential Team Roles & Composition

A well-rounded team typically includes a mix of archetypes that cover key roles. While specific builds vary, these general roles are vital:

  • Tank (Damage Sponge):
    • Archetypes: Tanker, Brute.
    • Role: Draws enemy aggro (threat) and soaks up damage, protecting squishier teammates. They often have high defense, resistance, and health.
    • Key Abilities: Taunts (e.g., Challenging Stare, Gauntlet), self-healing, damage resistance toggles.
    • Strategy: Engage enemies first, use taunts to keep them focused on you, and position yourself to protect the team.
  • Healer/Support (Lifesaver):
    • Archetypes: Defender, Corruptor, Controller (with healing secondaries).
    • Role: Keeps the team alive through healing, buffs, and crowd control.
    • Key Abilities: Single-target heals (e.g., Aid Other, Healing Aura), area-of-effect heals (e.g., Regeneration Aura), resistance buffs, endurance recovery.
    • Strategy: Prioritize healing low-health teammates, especially the Tank. Apply buffs proactively and use endurance recovery on power-hungry allies.
  • Controller/Crowd Control (Master of Mayhem):
    • Archetypes: Controller, Dominator, Peacebringer/Warshade (with CC powers).
    • Role: Disables or hinders enemies, preventing them from attacking or making them easier to defeat.
    • Key Abilities: Holds (e.g., Stun, Sleep), Confuses, Roots, Disorients, Slows.
    • Strategy: Prioritize dangerous enemies (e.g., enemy healers, strong bosses) for crowd control. Coordinate with the team to avoid breaking holds prematurely with damage.
  • Damage Dealer (DPS - Damage Per Second):
    • Archetypes: Scrapper, Blaster, Sentinel, Stalker, Brute, Corruptor, Dominator.
    • Role: Focuses on eliminating enemies quickly.
    • Key Abilities: High-damage attacks, area-of-effect attacks, debuffs that reduce enemy defenses.
    • Strategy: Focus fire on targets called by the Tank or Team Leader. Avoid pulling aggro from the Tank.

Recommended Team Composition (General): For most challenging content, aim for at least 1 Tank, 1-2 Healers/Support, 1 Controller, and the rest as Damage Dealers. Flexibility is key, but covering these core roles will significantly increase your success rate.

Difficulty Settings & Enhancements

When forming a team, the Team Leader can adjust the mission difficulty. This is crucial for balancing challenge and reward.

  • Mission Architect (MA) Contact: To adjust difficulty, the Team Leader must speak to a Mission Architect Contact in any major zone (e.g., Atlas Park, Steel Canyon, Mercy Island).
  • Difficulty Options:
    • Enemy Level: Can be set from -4 to +4 relative to the highest-level team member. Higher levels mean tougher enemies but better XP and rewards.
    • Enemy Spawns: Can be set from x1 to x8. More spawns mean more enemies per group, increasing challenge and potential drops.
    • No-Fail: An optional setting that prevents mission failure, though it significantly reduces rewards. Useful for learning new content.
  • Influence/Infamy Bonus: Higher difficulty settings grant increased Influence (for Heroes) or Infamy (for Villains) and experience.

Group Content: Where to Find the Action

City of Heroes offers a diverse array of group content, each with its own unique challenges and rewards.

Missions & Story Arcs

Many contacts offer missions designed for groups. Look for contacts with a "Team Up" icon next to their name or mission description. Story Arcs, especially later ones, often require a full team to complete effectively.

Task Forces (TF) & Strike Forces (SF)

These are multi-mission, narrative-driven challenges designed for full teams (typically 8 players). They offer unique badges, high-tier rewards, and often culminate in epic boss battles.

  • Starting a Task Force: The Team Leader must speak to the designated Task Force contact. Ensure all team members meet the minimum level requirement.
  • Popular Task Forces (Heroes):
    • Positron Task Force (Levels 20-29): Located in Steel Canyon. Contact: Positron. Rewards include rare Invention Origin Enhancements.
    • Lord Recluse Strike Force (Levels 30-39): Located in Grandville. Contact: Lord Recluse. A villainous counterpart, but heroes can participate via specific contacts later on.
    • Lady Grey Task Force (Levels 40-50): Located in Founders' Falls. Contact: Lady Grey. Features challenging Praetorian enemies and high-level rewards.
  • Popular Strike Forces (Villains):
    • Barracuda Strike Force (Levels 20-29): Located in Cap au Diable. Contact: Barracuda. Focuses on taking down Paragon City heroes.
    • Ghost Widow Strike Force (Levels 30-39): Located in Port Oakes. Contact: Ghost Widow. Involves dealing with Arachnos internal conflicts and rival factions.
  • Strategy for TFs/SFs:
    • Stay Together: Avoid splitting up unless specifically instructed.
    • Focus Fire: Coordinate targets to eliminate threats quickly.
    • Utilize Roles: Tanks hold aggro, Healers keep everyone alive, Controllers disable key enemies, and DPS burns them down.
    • Read Objectives: Pay attention to mission objectives, as they often involve more than just defeating enemies.

Trials

Trials are high-level, repeatable group content designed for max-level characters (Level 50). They offer some of the best rewards in the game, including Incarnate Components and rare crafting materials.

  • The Rikti War Zone (RWZ):
    • Location: Accessed via the Rikti War Zone portal in Atlas Park (Heroes) or Mercy Island (Villains).
    • Content: A dynamic zone with public events, mini-bosses, and large-scale battles against the Rikti. Teams often form ad-hoc here.
    • Rewards: Rikti Comms, Incarnate Threads, and various enhancements.
  • Dark Astoria (DA):
    • Location: Accessed via the Dark Astoria portal in Atlas Park (Heroes) or Mercy Island (Villains).
    • Content: A challenging zone with unique enemies and a series of repeatable missions and public events.
    • Rewards: Dark Astoria Badges, Incarnate Components, and rare salvage.
  • Apex/Mera Trials:
    • Location: Accessed via specific contacts in Ouroboros (Apex) or the Shadow Shard (Mera).
    • Content: These are instanced, highly challenging encounters against powerful bosses, requiring excellent team coordination and gear.
    • Rewards: High-tier Incarnate Components, unique enhancements, and prestige badges.

Tips for Successful Teaming

  • Be Punctual: If you sign up for a team, be ready to go at the agreed-upon time.
  • Be Prepared: Ensure your character is properly geared, has enough enhancements, and understands their role. Carry plenty of inspirations and healing items.
  • Listen to the Leader: The Team Leader often has a plan. Follow their instructions, especially regarding targets and movement.
  • Don't Be Afraid to Ask Questions: If you're new to a specific Task Force or Trial, let your team know. Most players are happy to offer advice.
  • Be Polite: A positive attitude makes for a much more enjoyable experience for everyone.
  • Use Inspirations Wisely: Save your powerful inspirations (e.g., Resurgence, Awakening) for critical moments.
  • Know Your Powers: Understand what your powers do and when to use them effectively.
