Troop Compositions by Town Hall Level

Mastering Clash of Clans requires a deep understanding of effective troop compositions for each Town Hall (TH) level. This guide provides specific, actionable strategies to help you dominate your opponents, whether you're farming resources or pushing trophies.

Town Hall 7: Dragon Domination

At Town Hall 7, Dragons are your bread and butter. Their high hitpoints and area-of-effect damage make them incredibly powerful against most TH7 bases, especially those with poorly placed Air Defenses.

  • Composition: 10x Dragons, 3x Lightning Spells (or 2x Lightning, 1x Rage).
  • Clan Castle Troops: Max level Balloons or another Dragon.
  • Strategy:
    1. Zap Air Defenses: Identify the two closest Air Defenses. Use two Lightning Spells on one and one Lightning Spell on the other (if they are close enough to each other, you might be able to hit both with two spells). The goal is to eliminate at least one Air Defense entirely and severely weaken another.
    2. Funneling: Deploy 1-2 Dragons on each side of your main attack path to create a funnel. This prevents your main force from circling the base.
    3. Main Push: Once the funnel is established, deploy the remaining Dragons in a line towards the core of the base, aiming for the remaining Air Defenses.
    4. Rage Spell (Optional): If you brought a Rage Spell, deploy it over your Dragons as they encounter high-health defenses or Clan Castle troops.
    5. Clan Castle Deployment: Release your Clan Castle troops (e.g., Balloons) behind your Dragons to provide additional damage, especially if they are max level.
  • Target Bases: Look for bases with exposed or easily accessible Air Defenses. Avoid bases with centralized, high-level Air Defenses that are difficult to reach.

Town Hall 8: GoWiPe & DragonLoon

Town Hall 8 introduces more complex strategies. While Dragons are still viable, the GoWiPe (Golems, Wizards, PEKKAs) and DragonLoon (Dragons, Balloons) compositions become increasingly effective.

GoWiPe (Golems, Wizards, PEKKAs)

GoWiPe is a powerful ground attack strategy that excels at clearing the core of a base.

  • Composition: 2x Golems, 2x PEKKAs, 10-12x Wizards, 4-6x Wall Breakers, 2x Rage Spells, 1x Heal Spell.
  • Clan Castle Troops: Max level PEKKA or Golem.
  • Strategy:
    1. Golem Deployment: Deploy Golems on two separate points along the chosen entry side to tank defenses.
    2. Wizard Funnel: Behind the Golems, deploy a line of Wizards to clear surrounding buildings and create a funnel. Ensure the Wizards don't stray.
    3. Wall Breaker Entry: Once the funnel is clear, use Wall Breakers to open the first layer of walls, allowing your Golems and other troops to enter.
    4. PEKKA & Hero Deployment: Deploy your PEKKAs and Barbarian King into the funnel, directing them towards the core.
    5. Rage & Heal: Use Rage Spells to speed up your PEKKAs and Wizards through high-damage areas or when they engage the Clan Castle troops. Deploy a Heal Spell over your troops if they are taking heavy damage from splash defenses like Wizard Towers or Mortars.
    6. Clan Castle Lure (Optional): If the Clan Castle is easily lurable, consider luring and eliminating its troops with a few Wizards or your Barbarian King before the main push.
  • Target Bases: Bases with compact layouts and centralized Clan Castles are ideal for GoWiPe, as the PEKKAs can quickly tear through the core.
DragonLoon (Dragons, Balloons)

This air attack combines the tankiness of Dragons with the high damage output of Balloons.

  • Composition: 8x Dragons, 8x Balloons, 2x Rage Spells, 1x Heal Spell (or 3x Rage).
  • Clan Castle Troops: Max level Balloons.
  • Strategy:
    1. Funneling Dragons: Deploy 1-2 Dragons on each side of your chosen entry point to create a funnel, clearing peripheral buildings.
    2. Main Dragon Push: Deploy the remaining Dragons in a line towards the core, aiming for Air Defenses.
    3. Balloon Deployment: Once the Dragons have drawn fire from Air Defenses, deploy your Balloons in groups of 2-3 behind the Dragons, targeting the Air Defenses.
    4. Rage Spells: Use Rage Spells to speed up both Dragons and Balloons as they approach Air Defenses or other high-priority targets.
    5. Heal Spell: If you brought a Heal Spell, use it to keep your Dragons alive through concentrated Air Defense fire.
  • Target Bases: Bases with Air Defenses that are relatively close to the outer perimeter or are not heavily protected by other air-targeting defenses.

Town Hall 9: Queen Walk & GoHo/GoVaHo

Town Hall 9 introduces the Archer Queen, a game-changing hero. Strategies often revolve around using her power, combined with powerful ground troops.

Queen Walk (with GoHo or GoVaHo)

The Queen Walk involves using the Archer Queen and Healers to clear a section of the base, creating a funnel or taking out key defenses, before deploying the main attack force.

  • Composition (GoHo variant): 1x Golem, 4x Healers, 10-12x Wizards, 20-25x Hog Riders, 2x Jump Spells, 2x Heal Spells, 1x Rage Spell.
  • Composition (GoVaHo variant): 1x Golem, 4x Healers, 8-10x Wizards, 8-10x Valkyries, 10-15x Hog Riders, 2x Jump Spells, 2x Heal Spells, 1x Rage Spell.
  • Clan Castle Troops: Max level Golem or Hogs/Valkyries.
  • Strategy:
    1. Queen Walk Setup: Deploy your Archer Queen on a corner or side of the base, followed by 4 Healers. The goal is for her to clear outer buildings, potentially take out an Air Defense, or lure the Clan Castle.
    2. Funneling (if needed): Use a Golem and a few Wizards on an adjacent side to create a funnel for your main force, ensuring the Queen stays on her path.
    3. Lure & Kill Clan Castle: If the Queen doesn't lure the Clan Castle, use a Hog Rider or Giant to pull troops out, then eliminate them with Wizards or your Queen's ability.
    4. Main Push (Golem/Valkyries): Deploy your Golem(s) and Wizards, followed by Wall Breakers or a Jump Spell to breach the first layer of walls. If using Valkyries, deploy them behind the Golem.
    5. Hog Rider Deployment: Once the core defenses are distracted by your Golem/Valkyries/Heroes, deploy your Hog Riders in a surgical manner (2-3 per defense) or in a wave to clear outer defenses.
    6. Spell Placement: Use Jump Spells to guide your Golem/Valkyries/Heroes into the core. Deploy Heal Spells over your Hog Riders as they encounter splash damage defenses (Wizard Towers, Multi-Target Infernos if applicable, though not at TH9) or concentrated point defense fire. Use Rage Spells on your Queen during her walk if she's under heavy fire, or on your core troops for faster destruction.
    7. King Deployment: Deploy your Barbarian King to support the main push or to help funnel.
  • Target Bases: Bases with spread-out defenses that can be picked off by Hogs, and where the Queen can get significant value on the outside. GoVaHo is excellent against compact bases.

These compositions provide a strong foundation for success at each Town Hall level. Remember to adapt your strategy based on the specific base layout you are attacking and always practice in friendly challenges to refine your skills!
