The best use of gems is for purchasing additional Builder Huts, up to the maximum of 5 (or 6 with the Builder Base). Beyond that, save them for Magic Items from the Trader or for speeding up crucial Hero upgrades during Clan Wars. You can earn free gems by clearing obstacles, completing achievements, and participating in events. Never spend them on resources or speeding up troop training.
