Gems are the premium currency in Clash of Clans. While they can be purchased with real money, you can also earn them by clearing obstacles, completing achievements, and participating in events. The most valuable use of gems for free-to-play players is purchasing additional Builder Huts. Avoid using them to speed up individual upgrades unless absolutely necessary.
