Currencies

Understanding the various currencies in Clash Royale is paramount to your success, allowing you to upgrade cards, acquire new ones, and progress efficiently through the Arenas. This detailed guide will break down each currency, how to obtain it, and the most strategic ways to spend it.

Gold

Gold is the most fundamental currency in Clash Royale, essential for almost every progression aspect. You'll need vast quantities of it to upgrade your cards, purchase items from the Shop, and even participate in certain challenges.

Obtaining Gold

  • Winning Battles: Each victory in Ladder, Clan Wars, or even some Special Challenges rewards you with a small amount of Gold. The higher your Arena, the more Gold you'll earn per win.
  • Opening Chests: All chests, from Silver Chests to Legendary Chests, contain varying amounts of Gold. Focus on consistently opening chests to maintain a steady income.
  • Donating Cards: Contributing cards to your clanmates is an excellent way to earn Gold. Each common card donated gives 5 Gold, rare cards give 50 Gold, and epic cards give 500 Gold. This also earns you Star Points once you reach King Level 6.
  • Daily Tasks & Quests: Completing daily tasks and seasonal quests often provides Gold rewards. Check the "Quests" tab regularly.
  • Shop Offers: The Shop frequently features Gold offers, sometimes for Gems or real money. Be selective with these, as some offer better value than others.
  • Special Challenges & Tournaments: Many limited-time challenges and global tournaments offer significant Gold rewards for reaching certain win thresholds.
  • Pass Royale: For Pass Royale holders, there are numerous Gold rewards available on both the free and premium tracks, including Gold Crates and bonus Gold from every chest.
  • Crown Chests & War Chests: These chests, earned through collecting crowns or participating in Clan Wars, are reliable sources of substantial Gold.

Spending Gold Strategically

  • Card Upgrades: This is where the majority of your Gold will go. Prioritize upgrading your main deck cards first. Avoid upgrading every card immediately, as Gold becomes a bottleneck quickly.
  • Shop Purchases:
    • Cards: You can purchase specific cards from the daily shop rotation. This is particularly useful for acquiring missing cards for a new deck or for "finishing off" an upgrade when you're just a few cards short. Legendary cards cost 40,000 Gold, Epic cards 2,000 Gold, Rare cards 100 Gold, and Common cards 5 Gold.
    • Star Levels: Once a card reaches max level, you can spend Gold to unlock Star Levels, which are purely cosmetic upgrades. This is a late-game Gold sink.
  • Challenge Entries: Some special challenges require a Gold entry fee. Only participate if you're confident in your ability to earn back the entry fee and more.

Gems

Gems are the premium currency in Clash Royale, offering significant advantages for those who choose to spend them wisely. While they can be purchased with real money, free-to-play You can still accumulate them over time.

Obtaining Gems

  • Chests: Small amounts of Gems can occasionally be found in chests, particularly Crown Chests and War Chests.
  • Daily Tasks & Quests: Some quests reward Gems upon completion.
  • Special Challenges: Certain challenges offer Gems as rewards for reaching specific win milestones.
  • Trophy Road: As you progress on the Trophy Road, you'll unlock various Gem rewards.
  • Pass Royale: The free track of Pass Royale offers a few Gem rewards, while the premium track often includes more.
  • Shop Offers: Gems can be purchased directly from the Shop with real money.

Spending Gems Strategically

  • Global Tournaments & Special Challenge Retries: This is arguably the best use of Gems for competitive players. Retrying a Global Tournament run for 50 Gems can lead to significant rewards if you perform well.
  • Emotes: Many players enjoy collecting emotes to express themselves in battle. These typically cost 250 Gems.
  • Tower Skins: Cosmetic upgrades for your King Towers, usually costing 250 Gems.
  • Emote & Tower Skin Bundles: Occasionally, the shop will offer bundles with both an emote and a tower skin for a slightly reduced Gem cost.
  • Opening Chests Instantly (Avoid!): While tempting, spending Gems to instantly open chests is generally considered a poor use of your premium currency. Time will open them for free.
  • Purchasing Gold (Avoid!): Converting Gems to Gold is inefficient. There are much better ways to acquire Gold.

Star Points

Star Points are a cosmetic currency introduced for max-level cards, allowing you to unlock unique visual effects for your troops and towers.

Obtaining Star Points

  • King Level Progression: Once you reach King Level 6, you'll start earning Star Points.
  • Donating Cards: Donating cards to clanmates earns you Star Points in addition to Gold.
  • Upgrading Cards: Upgrading cards to higher levels, especially max level, grants Star Points.
  • Collecting Max-Level Cards: Any additional copies of a card you collect once it's at max level will convert into Star Points.
  • Chests: Chests can also contain Star Points once you're at King Level 6.

Spending Star Points

  • Star Levels: Star Points are exclusively used to unlock Star Levels for your max-level cards. These are purely cosmetic enhancements that change the appearance of your troops and towers in battle.
    • Star Level 1: Typically a subtle visual change, like a golden trim.
    • Star Level 2: More pronounced visual effects, often with animated elements.
    • Star Level 3: The most elaborate cosmetic upgrade, sometimes changing the entire appearance or adding significant animations.

Trade Tokens

Trade Tokens are invaluable for acquiring specific cards you need for upgrades or new deck compositions, especially rare, epic, and legendary cards.

Types of Trade Tokens

  • Common Trade Token
  • Rare Trade Token
  • Epic Trade Token
  • Legendary Trade Token

Obtaining Trade Tokens

  • Clan Wars: Participating in Clan Wars and earning War Chests is a primary source of Trade Tokens.
  • Trophy Road: As you climb the Trophy Road, you'll receive various Trade Tokens as rewards.
  • Special Challenges & Global Tournaments: Many limited-time events offer Trade Tokens as rewards.
  • Shop Offers: Occasionally, Trade Tokens are available for purchase in the Shop, sometimes for Gems or real money.
  • Pass Royale: Both the free and premium tracks of Pass Royale often include Trade Tokens.

Using Trade Tokens

  1. Join a Clan: You must be in a clan to use Trade Tokens.
  2. Initiate a Trade: Go to your Clan chat and tap the "Trade" button (looks like two arrows circling each other).
  3. Select Cards to Give & Receive:
    • Choose the card you are willing to give away (you must have enough copies of it).
    • Choose the card you wish to receive.
  4. Post the Trade: Your trade offer will appear in the Clan chat.
  5. Clanmate Accepts: Another clanmate with the corresponding Trade Token and the desired card must accept your trade. If they have the card you want and need the card you're offering, they can use their own Trade Token to complete the exchange.

Pro-Tip: Coordinate with your clanmates! Ask in chat if anyone has the cards you need or wants the cards you're offering before posting a trade. This ensures your tokens are used efficiently.

Elite Wild Cards

Elite Wild Cards are a relatively new currency, specifically designed to help players upgrade cards to Level 15, the highest possible level.

Obtaining Elite Wild Cards

  • Max-Level Card Collection: When you collect additional copies of a card that is already at Level 14, those extra cards convert into Elite Wild Cards. The conversion rate varies by rarity:
    • Common: 1 Common card = 1 Elite Wild Card
    • Rare: 1 Rare card = 5 Elite Wild Cards
    • Epic: 1 Epic card = 20 Elite Wild Cards
    • Legendary: 1 Legendary card = 1,500 Elite Wild Cards
    • Champion: 1 Champion card = 4,000 Elite Wild Cards
  • Magic Items Conversion: Excess Magic Items (Wild Cards, Book of Cards) for maxed-out cards will also convert into Elite Wild Cards.
  • Shop Offers: Very rarely, Elite Wild Cards might appear in the shop for purchase with real money.
  • Pass Royale: The premium track of Pass Royale often includes significant amounts of Elite Wild Cards.

Spending Elite Wild Cards

  • Level 15 Upgrades: Elite Wild Cards are exclusively used to upgrade any card from Level 14 to Level 15. Each Level 15 upgrade costs 50,000 Elite Wild Cards.

Strategy: Focus on maxing out cards you use frequently to start generating Elite Wild Cards. Prioritize upgrading your core deck to Level 15 first, as the stat boost is substantial.
