Skull King Strategy
The Skull King, a spectral menace encountered in the treacherous depths of the Frozen Vein, is a boss that emphasizes precise timing and the management of its debilitating status effects. This boss primarily attacks with spectral blades and a chilling aura that can inflict Frostbite, slowing your movement and attack speed. Its most dangerous attack is the "Phantom Barrage," where it summons multiple spectral swords that rain down upon the arena. Watch for the Skull King raising its hands; this is the cue to sprint towards the edge of the arena or find cover behind the limited debris.
When the Skull King performs its "Spectral Dash," a rapid forward lunge with its primary blade, dodge *through* the attack. This will often position you behind it, creating a small window for 1-2 hits. Its "Chilling Grasp" attack, where it attempts to grab you, has a moderate telegraph and can be dodged by rolling to the side. If you are caught, you will take significant damage and likely suffer Frostbite. Consider equipping the Frost Resistance passive or using items like the Cooling Mist to mitigate the effects of Frostbite. The Skull King is particularly vulnerable to Fire damage. If you have access to the Prometheus Blood Code and its fire-based Gifts, such as Flame Barrage, this is an excellent opportunity to utilize them.
During its "Desolation Scream" attack, the Skull King will unleash a wide cone of icy energy. This attack has a significant wind-up, giving you ample time to dodge laterally. After this attack, the Skull King often enters a brief recovery period, allowing for a few more hits. Be mindful of its spectral summons; these smaller entities can harass you and make dodging the Skull King's main attacks more difficult. Prioritize eliminating them quickly with swift attacks or AoE Gifts. If you find yourself struggling with its speed, consider using Gifts that slow enemies, such as Binding Chains, if available. Patience is key; avoid overextending your combos and always prioritize maintaining enough Stamina for evasive maneuvers. The Skull King's health pool is considerable, so consistent, well-timed damage is more effective than risky, prolonged assaults.
