Difficulty Settings & New Game+

Understand Code Vein II's difficulty settings and New Game+ options. Choose your challenge and prepare for the return of the lost.

Code Vein 2 offers a range of difficulty settings to cater to both seasoned Revenant hunters and newcomers to the challenging world. You can select from 'Story Mode,' designed for a more narrative-focused experience with reduced combat difficulty, 'Normal Mode,' which provides a balanced challenge, and 'Apocalypse Mode,' an increased difficulty setting that introduces tougher enemies and more aggressive AI. Each mode impacts enemy health, damage output, and the frequency of certain enemy types. Furthermore, the game features a robust New Game+ system. Upon completing the main story, You can choose to start a new playthrough with their existing character, retaining all acquired Blood Codes, Gifts, and equipment. However, enemy levels and some boss encounters will be scaled up to provide a fresh challenge. Certain narrative choices made in the first playthrough can also lead to different dialogue options and potentially unlock new events or endings in subsequent New Game+ cycles, encouraging replayability and exploration of the branching narrative paths.

The choice of difficulty setting significantly impacts the player's approach to combat and resource management. In 'Apocalypse Mode,' for instance, the limited supply of potent consumables like Queenslayer's Blood and the increased aggression of foes such as the Crimson Husk demand meticulous planning and efficient use of Gifts. The 'Story Mode,' conversely, allows players to experiment more freely with different Blood Code combinations and Gift loadouts without the constant pressure of survival, making it an ideal starting point for those unfamiliar with Souls-like mechanics or primarily interested in the rich lore and character interactions. The New Game+ feature is not merely a difficulty increase; it's an opportunity to delve deeper into the game's mechanics, discover hidden secrets, and pursue alternative endings. For example, a player who focused on melee combat in their initial run might opt for a Gift-heavy build in New Game+ to tackle familiar challenges with a completely different strategy. The game also tracks certain achievements and trophies that are tied to completing the game on specific difficulties or within a certain number of cycles, further incentivizing players to engage with the New Game+ system.
