Parrying & Backstabbing

Mastering the parry and backstab mechanics in Code Vein II offers a significant advantage in combat, allowing you to turn the tide of battle and deal devastating damage. A successful parry, executed by timing a specific defensive input precisely as an enemy attack lands, will stagger the opponent, leaving them open for a critical hit. This mechanic requires keen observation of enemy attack animations and precise timing. For instance, parrying the heavy overhead slam of a Crimson Knight is a high-risk, high-reward maneuver.

The window for a successful parry is often very narrow, typically just a few frames before the attack connects. Failing a parry will usually result in taking full damage from the enemy's attack, and potentially staggering yourself. However, a successful parry opens up a Critical Attack opportunity. When an enemy is staggered from a parry, a prompt will appear, allowing you to execute a powerful, high-damage attack. This is crucial for quickly dispatching tougher foes or creating breathing room in overwhelming situations.

Backstabbing, on the other hand, is a stealth-based critical hit. If you can position yourself directly behind an unaware or staggered enemy, you can initiate a backstab. This attack deals significantly more damage than a standard attack and can often one-shot weaker enemies. Enemies that are particularly susceptible to backstabs include the lumbering Abyssal Golems. Combining parries with backstabs is a highly effective combat strategy. After a successful parry and critical hit, you can often reposition yourself behind the recovering enemy to initiate a backstab for even more damage. Certain Blood Codes and Gifts, like 'Shadow Step', can aid in repositioning for backstabs, while others, like 'Iron Will', can increase the damage of critical hits. Learning the attack patterns of each enemy type is key to mastering both parrying and backstabbing.
