Character Progression
Mastering character progression in Code Vein is crucial for surviving the treacherous world of Vein. This guide will walk you through the essential steps, focusing on Blood Codes, Gifts, and equipment upgrades to optimize your build from early to late game.
Early Game: Establishing Your Foundation (Ruined City Underground - Dried-up Trenches)
Your initial hours in Code Vein are about understanding the core mechanics and building a versatile foundation. Focus on exploring thoroughly, as early resources are vital.
Blood Code Acquisition & Mastery
- Fighter (Default): Your starting Blood Code. Prioritize unlocking its core Gifts like Adrenaline (increases attack power) and Iron Will (increases defense). These are universally useful.
- Strider (Ruined City Underground): Found early on. Offers more mobility and stamina-focused Gifts. Aim for Swift Destruction for increased damage after dodging.
- Berserker (Ruined City Underground): A strength-focused Blood Code. Acquire it to unlock powerful melee Gifts like Blow of Madness.
- Caster (Ruined City Underground): Your first magic-oriented Blood Code. While not for every build, unlock its Gifts like Plasma Shot and Blood Shot to inherit them for later use, even if you don't actively use the Blood Code.
Gift Unlocking & Inheritance
To unlock Gifts, you need to earn Haze (experience) while the Blood Code is active. Once a Gift is mastered (indicated by a star), it becomes inheritable, meaning you can equip it with any other Blood Code.
- Prioritize Passive Gifts: Early on, focus on mastering passive Gifts that boost your core stats or provide utility. Examples include Increased Stamina, Increased Max Ichor, and Health Boost.
- Active Gift Synergy: Experiment with active Gifts from different Blood Codes. For instance, a Fighter build can greatly benefit from the mobility Gifts of Strider.
Equipment Upgrades & Acquisition
- Weapons:
- Broadsword: A solid early-game weapon. Upgrade it at Murasame in the Home Base using Queen Iron, found commonly in the Ruined City Underground.
- Hammer of Thralldom: A heavy, high-damage option if you prefer slower, more impactful attacks. Found in the Ruined City Underground.
- Blood Veils:
- Night Claw: A balanced early-game Blood Veil. Upgrade with Queen Iron.
- Hound Blouse: Offers good defense. Found in the Ruined City Underground.
- Enhancement Materials: Collect all Queen Iron and Loss Shards (S) you find. These are your primary early-game upgrade materials.
Mid Game: Specialization and Optimization (Cathedral of the Sacred Blood - City of Falling Flame)
As you progress, you'll start to encounter more challenging enemies and bosses. This is where specializing your build and optimizing your Gift loadout becomes crucial.
Advanced Blood Code Acquisition
- Prometheus (Cathedral of the Sacred Blood): A versatile Blood Code with excellent stat scaling and powerful Gifts like Overdrive (increases attack and defense) and Gift Extension (extends Gift duration). This is a must-have for many builds.
- Eos (Cathedral of the Sacred Blood): Focused on support and healing. Essential for co-op or if you prefer a more defensive playstyle. Master Regenerative Drain and Blood Sacrifice.
- Atlas (City of Falling Flame): A heavy-hitter Blood Code. Acquire it for high strength scaling and powerful offensive Gifts like Severing Abyss.
Gift Synergy and Loadouts
With more Blood Codes and Gifts available, start crafting specific loadouts for different situations.
- Melee DPS Build: Combine Fighter or Prometheus with Gifts like Adrenaline, Blow of Madness (from Berserker), Swift Destruction (from Strider), and Bridge to Glory (from Prometheus).
- Caster Build: Use Isis (found later) or Harmonia (found later) with Gifts like Plasma Shot, Blood Shot, Voltaic Roar (from Caster), and Concentration (from Caster).
- Tank/Support Build: Utilize Eos or Atlas with Gifts like Iron Will, Guard of Honor (from Atlas), Regenerative Drain, and various healing or buffing Gifts.
Equipment Refinement

- Executioner: A strong two-handed sword found in the Cathedral. Upgrade with Queen Steel.
- Argent Wolf Blade: A fast, one-handed sword with good scaling. Found in the City of Falling Flame.

Late Game: Mastery and Perfection (Crown of Sand - Provisional Government Outskirts)
In the late game, your goal is to fine-tune your build, acquire the most powerful Blood Codes and equipment, and maximize your damage and survivability.
Peak Blood Code Performance
- Scathach (Crown of Sand): An incredibly powerful Blood Code for melee builds, offering high strength and dexterity scaling and potent offensive Gifts like Final Journey (a high-risk, high-reward buff).

- Fionn (Provisional Government Outskirts): A robust tank Blood Code with high vitality and strong defensive Gifts.

General Progression Tips
- Explore Thoroughly: Always check every corner for items, Mistle, and hidden paths. Many Blood Codes and powerful Gifts are found off the beaten path.
- Don't Hoard Haze: Spend your Haze regularly at Mistle to level up. Losing a large amount of Haze can be frustrating.
- Master Gifts Early: Even if you don't plan to use a Blood Code, mastering its Gifts allows you to inherit them later, opening up more build possibilities.
- Utilize Companions: Your companions offer unique buffs and support. Experiment with different companions to see who best complements your playstyle. Louis is excellent for damage, while Io provides strong healing.
- Practice Parrying and Backstabbing: These mechanics offer significant damage opportunities and can turn the tide of a difficult fight.
- Consider Depths Maps: Depths maps offer challenging encounters and often reward unique items, Blood Codes, and valuable upgrade materials.
