Exploration & World
Navigating the desolate yet beautiful world of Vein is crucial for survival. This section will guide you through key areas, highlight important items, and offer strategies for effective exploration.
Ruined City Underground
Your journey begins in the labyrinthine Ruined City Underground, a challenging introduction to Vein's perils. Pay close attention to your surroundings and utilize your companion effectively.
- Initial Steps: After the tutorial area, you'll emerge into a larger section. Follow the main path, dealing with Lost enemies.
- First Mistle: Your primary objective is to locate the first Mistle (rest point). It's usually found after a short sequence of encounters, often near a more open area. Activating it allows you to level up, manage skills, and respawn.
- Key Items to Find:
- Queen's Iron: Essential for weapon upgrades. Look for these in chests or dropped by tougher enemies.
- Awake MJ212: Used to gain Haze (experience) and unlock new Gifts. Often found off the beaten path or after defeating mini-bosses.
- Blood Veils: Keep an eye out for new Blood Veils, which dictate your defensive stats and Gift proficiencies. The early areas might yield a basic Stinger or Ogre type.
- Combat Strategy:
- Ambush Points: The Ruined City is full of narrow corridors and blind corners. Always approach new areas cautiously, as enemies often lie in wait.
- Elevated Enemies: Watch out for Lost archers or casters on ledges. Prioritize taking them out with ranged attacks or by closing the distance quickly.
- Environmental Hazards: Some areas have explosive barrels or unstable structures. Use these to your advantage against groups of enemies.
- Path to the Depths: To progress, you'll eventually need to find a path leading deeper into the underground. This often involves activating a switch or clearing a specific group of enemies guarding an exit.
Dried-up Trenches
Following the Ruined City, you'll enter the Dried-up Trenches, a more open but equally dangerous area characterized by its sandy terrain and larger, more aggressive Lost.
- Navigating the Sands: The trenches can be disorienting. Stick to the main pathways initially and look for landmarks.
- Mistle Locations:
- The first Mistle in the Trenches is typically found shortly after entering the area, often near a small encampment of Lost.
- A second Mistle can be located deeper in, usually after traversing a more challenging section with multiple elite enemies.
- Notable Encounters:
- Executioner: A formidable Lost wielding a large axe. These often guard key pathways or valuable items. Learn their attack patterns and exploit openings.
- Spiked Lost: These enemies can inflict status effects. Dodge their attacks and counter-attack when safe.
- Item Discoveries:
- Regen Inducer: A crucial upgrade item that increases your maximum Regeneration uses. Often hidden in side paths or behind optional mini-bosses.
- Vestige Fragments: These are vital for restoring memories and unlocking new Gifts. The Trenches contain several, often requiring careful exploration to find.
- Weapon Upgrades: Keep an eye out for Queen's Steel or other higher-tier upgrade materials in chests.
- Environmental Tips:
- Sand Pits: Some areas have quicksand-like pits that slow your movement. Be wary of enemies ambushing you in these spots.
- Elevated Platforms: Utilize any elevated positions for a tactical advantage, especially against groups.
General Exploration Tips
- Check Every Corner: Hidden paths, valuable items, and even crucial Mistle can be easily missed. Always explore dead ends and look for subtle clues like glowing items.
- Utilize Your Companion: Your companion is not just for combat. They can often point out hidden items or pathways, and their unique Gifts can be invaluable for exploration.
- Map Awareness: While the map in Code Vein isn't always perfectly detailed, pay attention to unexplored sections. Areas that are still dark on your map likely contain secrets or further progression.
- Memory Echoes: Interact with glowing white fragments. These are Memory Echoes that provide lore and sometimes reveal hidden paths or items.
- Return to Base: return to your Home Base regularly to sell unwanted items, purchase new gear, upgrade your equipment, and talk to NPCs for new quests or information.
