Difficulty Settings
Unlike many action RPGs, Code Vein does not feature traditional difficulty sliders (e.g., Easy, Normal, Hard) that you can select at the start of a new game. Instead, its difficulty is primarily influenced by your choices within the game world and the inherent scaling of New Game Plus cycles. This guide will detail how to manage and understand the game's dynamic difficulty.
Initial Playthrough Difficulty
Your first journey through Vein is designed to be challenging but manageable, with the core difficulty stemming from enemy encounters, boss mechanics, and environmental hazards. There are no direct options to make the game easier or harder from the main menu.
Strategies for Managing Difficulty (First Playthrough):
- Companion Selection: Your choice of companion significantly impacts combat.
- Louis: Offers a balanced approach with both offensive and support capabilities. His Blood Code, Prometheus, provides versatile Gifts.
- Io: An excellent healer and support character. Her Gifts can keep you alive through tough encounters.
- Yakumo: A tanky, aggressive companion who can draw aggro and deal substantial damage. His Blood Code, Atlas, is great for melee builds.
- Mia: A ranged attacker who can provide consistent damage from a distance. Her Blood Code, Artemis, focuses on ranged combat.
- Muramasa: (Available later) A powerful melee companion.
- Blood Code & Gift Optimization: This is your primary tool for adapting to challenges.
- Explore Diverse Blood Codes: Don't stick to just one. Collect all available Blood Codes (e.g., Fighter, Caster, Ranger, Queen's Breath, etc.) by progressing through the main story and completing side quests. Each offers unique stat distributions and Gifts.
- Inherit Gifts: Master Gifts from various Blood Codes to inherit them and use them with any other Blood Code. This allows for highly customized builds. For example, inheriting Adrenaline from the Fighter Blood Code can boost your damage significantly, while Regenerative Drain from the Caster Blood Code can provide crucial healing.
- Focus on Synergies: Combine Gifts that work well together. A melee build might benefit from Bridge to Glory (Eos Blood Code) for a massive damage buff, paired with Iron Will (Atlas Blood Code) for defense.
- Equipment Upgrades: Regularly upgrade your weapons and Blood Veils at the Home Base.
- Weapon Upgrades: Use Pure Blood and various Awake MJ materials to enhance your weapons. Higher-tier materials like Awake MJ310 are found in later areas or dropped by stronger enemies.
- Blood Veil Upgrades: Improve your Blood Veils using Pure Blood and Awake MJ materials to boost their defensive stats and Gift scaling.
- Transformation: Use Chromium and Titanium materials to apply transformations to your gear, altering their scaling and properties (e.g., Fortification for defense, Alleviation for lighter weight).
- Exploration and Leveling: Don't rush. Explore thoroughly to find Vestiges, items, and gain Haze (experience points).
- Haze Farming: If you're struggling, consider farming Haze in areas like the Ruined City Center or Howling World by repeatedly defeating enemies. Equip Blood Codes like Scout or Harmonia that have Haze-boosting passive Gifts.
- Vestige Restoration: Restoring Vestiges at the Home Base unlocks powerful Gifts and provides valuable lore.
New Game Plus (NG+) Difficulty
Code Vein's primary method of increasing difficulty is through its New Game Plus system. Upon completing the main story, you'll be given the option to start a New Game Plus cycle. This is where the game truly scales up its challenge.
NG+ Scaling Mechanics:
- Enemy Health and Damage: All enemies, including bosses, will have significantly increased health pools and deal more damage. This scaling continues with each subsequent NG+ cycle.
- Haze Rewards: While enemies are tougher, the Haze you gain from defeating them also increases, allowing for further character progression.
- Item Availability: All your acquired items, Blood Codes, Gifts, and equipment carry over into NG+. This allows you to tackle the increased difficulty with a fully developed character.
Strategies for NG+ Success:
- Optimized Builds: In NG+, having a highly optimized build is crucial. Focus on maximizing damage output, survivability, or a specific niche.
- One-Shot Builds: For speedrunning or quickly dispatching bosses, consider builds that combine high-damage Gifts like Bridge to Glory, Adrenaline, and Overdrive (Heimdall Blood Code) with powerful weapons.
- Tank Builds: use heavy armor, defensive Gifts like Iron Will, Guard Stability (Fionn Blood Code), and Blood Codes like Atlas or Isis to withstand heavy hits.
- Master All Gifts: Before entering NG+, aim to master as many Gifts as possible across various Blood Codes. This provides maximum flexibility for adapting to different encounters.
- Maxed-Out Equipment: Ensure your primary weapons and Blood Veils are fully upgraded and transformed to their optimal state (e.g., +10 with appropriate transformations).
- Familiarity with Boss Patterns: NG+ demands a deeper understanding of boss attack patterns and weaknesses. Practice makes perfect.
By understanding these mechanics and applying the detailed strategies, you can effectively navigate and conquer the challenges Code Vein presents, whether in your initial playthrough or the escalating difficulties of New Game Plus.
