It is both the primary currency and the experience point system you'll rely on to grow stronger, adapt to new threats, and ultimately reclaim your memories. Understanding how to acquire, manage, and effectively use Haze is paramount to your survival and success as a Revenant.

Acquiring Haze

Haze is accumulated through various activities in Code Vein. Maximizing your Haze intake is crucial for efficient leveling.

  • Defeating Enemies: The most consistent source of Haze. Every enemy, from the weakest Lost to the most formidable boss, drops Haze upon defeat. Stronger enemies and bosses yield significantly more Haze.
  • Consuming Haze Items: Throughout your journey, you'll discover various Haze items. These consumables instantly grant you a fixed amount of Haze.
    • Small Haze Mass: Grants 50 Haze.
    • Haze Mass: Grants 200 Haze.
    • Large Haze Mass: Grants 500 Haze.
    • Awakening Haze: Grants 1,000 Haze.
    • Pure Haze: Grants 5,000 Haze.
    • Queen's Haze: Grants 10,000 Haze. (Often dropped by bosses or found in late-game areas)
    Strategy Tip: Save higher-tier Haze items for when you need a quick boost to reach a new level or master a Gift, especially if you're far from a Mistle.
  • Completing Quests and Side Objectives: Certain NPCs, particularly those in the Home Base like Murasame or Coco, may offer small side quests or requests that reward Haze upon completion. Always check for new dialogue options after major story progression.
  • Depths Exploration: The Depths are optional, challenging areas that offer substantial Haze rewards from enemies and unique Haze items. They are excellent for farming Haze.

The Risk of Loss: Haze Management

Code Vein employs a "soulslike" mechanic for Haze loss, adding a layer of tension and strategic decision-making to your exploration.

  • Death Penalty: If your HP drops to zero, you will lose all the Haze you've accumulated since your last rest at a Mistle. This Haze is left behind at the exact location of your death.
  • Retrieval Attempt: Upon respawning at the nearest Mistle, you have one chance to return to your death location and retrieve your lost Haze. A glowing Haze icon will mark its position on your mini-map and in the environment. Simply walk over it to reclaim your Haze.
  • Permanent Loss: If you die again before reaching your dropped Haze, it is lost forever. This makes cautious progression and careful planning essential, especially when carrying large amounts of Haze.
  • Common Pitfall: Don't rush back into dangerous situations blindly. Take a moment to assess the threats that killed you previously and adjust your strategy or equipment before attempting retrieval. Sometimes, it's better to clear a path first, even if it means risking another death.

Leveling Up Your Revenant

Leveling up is the most direct way to increase your Revenant's raw power. This process is exclusively performed at Mistles.

  1. Locate a Mistle: These glowing white plants serve as your checkpoints and safe havens.
  2. Interact with the Mistle: Select the "Rest" option.
  3. Choose "Level Up": This option will be available in the Mistle menu.
  4. Spend Haze: Each level requires an increasing amount of Haze. As your level increases, your base stats automatically improve.
    • HP (Health Points): Increases your maximum health, allowing you to withstand more damage.
    • Stamina: Increases your maximum stamina, allowing for more attacks, dodges, and Gift activations.
    • Attack Power: Directly boosts the damage output of your weapons.
    • Defense: Reduces incoming damage from enemies.
    • Gift Power: Enhances the effectiveness of your Gifts (both offensive and supportive).

Strategy Tip: While it might be tempting to save Haze, it's generally advisable to level up frequently, especially before challenging boss encounters or venturing into new, dangerous areas. The stat boosts, even small ones, can make a significant difference.

Mastering Gifts: The True Power of Haze

Beyond simply increasing your level, Haze plays an equally critical role in mastering Gifts. This system is the cornerstone of Code Vein's build customization and offers immense strategic depth.

  1. Equip a Blood Code: Each Blood Code comes with a unique set of Gifts.
  2. Use Gifts in Combat: As you use a Gift in combat (by activating it with your Ichor), you gain "Gift Proficiency" for that specific Gift. You also gain proficiency passively by simply having the Blood Code equipped while defeating enemies.
  3. Spend Haze at a Mistle: At any Mistle, select the "Master Gifts" option.
  4. Mastering a Gift: You can spend Haze to instantly master a Gift, provided you have enough Haze and have met the proficiency requirement (usually by using it a certain number of times or gaining enough passive proficiency). The cost of mastering a Gift varies depending on its power and utility.

Why Master Gifts? Mastering a Gift allows you to use it with any other Blood Code, regardless of its original Blood Code. This is incredibly powerful:

  • Build Versatility: Mix and match powerful Gifts from different Blood Codes to create highly specialized builds. For example, you could take a powerful offensive Gift from a Caster Blood Code and use it on a Tank Blood Code.
  • Optimized Loadouts: Create loadouts that perfectly suit your playstyle or specific boss encounters.
  • Early Game Focus: Prioritize mastering universally useful Gifts early on. Good candidates include:
    • Iron Will (Fighter Blood Code): Temporarily increases defense.
    • Adrenaline (Fighter Blood Code): Temporarily increases attack power.
    • Blood Sacrifice (Caster Blood Code): Converts HP into Ichor, useful for Gift-heavy builds.
    • Restorative Gifts (various Blood Codes): Essential for healing.
    • Swiftness (Ranger Blood Code): Increases movement speed and dodge distance.

  • Repeat Depths Maps: The Depths offer concentrated enemy populations and often drop valuable Haze items. The Den of Darkness (accessible early) and Swirling Flood (mid-game) are excellent choices.
  • Boss Reruns (New Game+): In New Game+, bosses drop significantly more Haze. This is a late-game farming method.
  • Equip Haze-Boosting Veils: Certain Blood Veils (armor) have passive abilities that increase Haze acquisition. Always check the stats of new Veils you find. Look for the "Haze Acquisition Up" property.
  • Co-op Play: Playing with other Revenants can make clearing areas faster, leading to quicker Haze accumulation.
