Co-op & Multiplayer

Code Vein offers a robust co-op multiplayer experience, allowing you to team up with fellow Revenants to tackle the challenging Lost, explore treacherous dungeons, and overcome formidable bosses. This guide will walk you through the intricacies of online play, from summoning allies to maximizing your cooperative potential.

Summoning and Joining Sessions

The core of Code Vein's multiplayer revolves around sending and answering distress signals. You can engage in co-op with up to one other player, in addition to your AI companion, for a total party of three.

As a Host (Sending a Distress Signal)

  1. Locate a Mistle: To initiate a co-op session, you must be at any active Mistle (the game's equivalent of bonfires).
  2. Access the Multiplayer Menu: Interact with the Mistle and select the "Multiplayer" option.
  3. Send Distress Signal: Choose "Send Distress Signal." This will broadcast your request for assistance to other players.
  4. Set a Password (Optional but Recommended): If you wish to play with a specific friend, you can set a "Matching Password" within the Multiplayer menu before sending your signal. Your friend will need to enter the exact same password to join your session. This is crucial for private matches.
  5. Wait for a Partner: Once the signal is sent, the game will begin searching for available players. You can continue exploring the area or wait near the Mistle.
  6. Session Start: When a player joins, a notification will appear, and they will materialize near your Mistle.

Important Note for Hosts: Sending a distress signal consumes 1x Old-world Materials. These are common crafting components found throughout the game, often dropped by enemies or found in chests. Ensure you have a supply before attempting to summon.

As a Guest (Answering a Distress Signal)

  1. Locate a Mistle: Like hosts, you must be at any active Mistle to answer a distress signal.
  2. Access the Multiplayer Menu: Interact with the Mistle and select the "Multiplayer" option.
  3. Answer Distress Signal: Choose "Answer Distress Signal."
  4. Enter Password (If Applicable): If you are joining a friend, they will have provided you with a "Matching Password." Enter this password precisely when prompted. If you're looking for a random match, leave the password field blank.
  5. Select Destination: The game will present you with a list of available distress signals. These signals indicate the host's current area. Select the area you wish to join.
  6. Wait for Connection: The game will attempt to connect you to a host.
  7. Session Start: Once connected, you will be transported to the host's world, appearing near their Mistle.

Important Note for Guests: Answering a distress signal is free and does not consume any items.

Multiplayer Mechanics & Strategies

Co-op in Code Vein significantly alters the gameplay experience. Here's what you need to know to succeed:

Benefits of Co-op

  • Increased Survivability: Having another player and an AI companion drastically improves your chances against tough enemies and bosses. You can revive each other, draw aggro, and combine powerful Gift attacks.
  • Easier Exploration: Navigating complex maps like the Cathedral of the Sacred Blood or the City of Falling Flame becomes less daunting with an extra pair of eyes and hands.
  • Faster Progression: With coordinated attacks and shared burden, you can clear areas and defeat bosses more efficiently, potentially speeding up your overall game progression.
  • Shared Resources: While item drops are individual, the collective effort can lead to more successful runs, indirectly increasing your overall resource acquisition.

Co-op Limitations & Considerations

  • Area Restrictions: You can only summon or be summoned within the same general area. For instance, if you're in the Ruined City Underground, you can only connect with players also in that area.
  • No Cross-Play: Code Vein does not support cross-platform play. Players on PlayStation cannot play with those on Xbox or PC.
  • Host Progression Only: Any progress made in a co-op session (e.g., defeating bosses, unlocking Mistle points, opening shortcuts) only counts for the host. Guests will need to complete these objectives in their own world.
  • Increased Enemy Difficulty: While not explicitly stated with a visible buff, enemies in co-op sessions often feel more aggressive and have slightly increased health to compensate for the additional players.
  • Fog Walls: Similar to single-player, boss arenas are typically preceded by fog walls. All players must pass through the fog wall to enter the boss fight together. If a player is left behind, they will be unable to join the fight until the boss is defeated or the host dies.

Effective Co-op Strategies

  • Communication is Key: While Code Vein lacks in-game voice chat, using external communication (like Discord for PC players, or party chat for console players) is highly recommended for coordinating attacks, calling out enemy positions, and warning of hazards.
  • Diverse Builds: Try to have complementary Blood Codes and Gifts. One player could focus on tanking and drawing aggro (e.g., using a Fionn or Atlas Blood Code), while the other focuses on damage output (e.g., Prometheus or Heimdall) or support/healing (e.g., Isis or Artemis).
  • Revive Etiquette: Always prioritize reviving your fallen ally. Use Gifts like Regenerative Exodus or simply get close and hold the revive button. Be mindful of enemy attacks while attempting a revive.
  • Shared Aggro: For larger enemies and bosses, take turns drawing aggro. This allows one player to heal or reposition while the other keeps the enemy occupied.
  • Gift Synergy: Experiment with Gifts that complement each other. For example, one player could apply status effects like Venom or Stun, while the other capitalizes on the opening with high-damage attacks.
  • Explore Together: Stick together to avoid being overwhelmed by groups of Lost. Clear areas systematically.

Leaving a Co-op Session

If you need to leave a co-op session as a guest, you can do so at any time by accessing the Multiplayer menu at a Mistle and selecting "Return to Your World." As a host, your session will end if the guest leaves, if you defeat the area boss, or if you die.
