Unit Counters & Synergies
Mastering the art of unit counters and synergies is paramount to achieving victory in Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3. Understanding which units excel against others, and how different units can support each other, will allow you to build effective armies that can dismantle any enemy composition. This section provides detailed strategies for each faction.
Soviet Union
The Soviets boast powerful, often heavily armored units, but can be vulnerable to air attacks and fast, harassing units. Their strength lies in overwhelming force and area-of-effect damage.
- Conscript:
- Counters: Early game infantry, lightly armored vehicles (e.g., Imperial Tsunami Tank, Allied Riptide ACV). Their Molotov Cocktails are excellent against garrisoned buildings.
- Countered By: Any anti-infantry vehicle (e.g., Allied Guardian Tank, Imperial Tankbuster), air units (e.g., Allied Vindicator, Imperial Rocket Angel), and units with area-of-effect attacks (e.g., Allied Multigunner in anti-infantry mode).
- Synergies: Pair with Flak Troopers for anti-air support, or with Battle Bears to protect them from infantry and light vehicles. Conscripts can garrison structures to provide early defense.
- Flak Trooper:
- Counters: All air units (e.g., Allied Vindicator, Imperial Rocket Angel, Kirov Airship). Their flak cannons deal significant damage to aircraft.
- Countered By: Most ground vehicles (e.g., Allied Guardian Tank, Imperial Tsunami Tank) and infantry with anti-infantry capabilities.
- Synergies: Essential support for any ground army. Keep them behind your main tank line (e.g., Hammer Tanks, Apocalypse Tanks) to protect against air assaults. Can also be garrisoned in structures for static anti-air defense.
- Hammer Tank:
- Counters: Most ground vehicles (e.g., Allied Guardian Tank, Imperial Tsunami Tank) and structures. The "Leech Beam" ability allows them to steal weapons from enemy vehicles, making them incredibly versatile.
- Countered By: Anti-tank infantry (e.g., Imperial Tankbuster, Allied Peacekeeper with anti-armor upgrade), air units (e.g., Allied Vindicator, Imperial Rocket Angel), and strong anti-vehicle artillery.
- Synergies: Combine with Flak Troopers for air defense and Sickle units for anti-infantry support. Using the Leech Beam on a damaged enemy vehicle can turn the tide of a battle.
- Apocalypse Tank:
- Counters: All ground vehicles, structures, and even some air units with its "Black Hole Armor" ability activated. The most powerful Soviet ground unit.
- Countered By: Massed air units, especially Allied Vindicators or Imperial Rocket Angels, and concentrated anti-armor infantry.
- Synergies: The ultimate frontline unit. Protect with Flak Troopers and Desolators. Use its "Magnetic Harpoon" to pull in and destroy key enemy units.
- Kirov Airship:
- Counters: Structures, slow-moving ground units, and heavily armored targets. Devastatingly powerful but slow.
- Countered By: Any dedicated anti-air unit (e.g., Allied Multigunner, Imperial Rocket Angel, Soviet Flak Trooper).
- Synergies: Best used in conjunction with ground forces to draw anti-air fire, or in large groups to overwhelm defenses. The "Bombardment" ability can level entire bases.
Allied Nations
The Allies focus on versatility, speed, and advanced technology. They possess strong air power and effective defensive capabilities, but can be vulnerable to overwhelming ground assaults.
- Peacekeeper:
- Counters: Early game infantry, garrisoned structures. With the "Riot Shield" ability, they can absorb significant damage.
- Countered By: Anti-infantry vehicles (e.g., Soviet Sickle, Imperial Tsunami Tank), and units with area-of-effect attacks.
- Synergies: Excellent for early map control and garrisoning. Pair with Guardian Tanks for frontline defense or with Multigunners for combined anti-infantry and anti-air.
- Guardian Tank:
- Counters: Most ground vehicles and structures. The "Target Painter" ability significantly increases damage from other Allied units.
- Countered By: Anti-tank infantry (e.g., Imperial Tankbuster, Soviet Conscript with Molotovs), and massed air units.
- Synergies: The backbone of the Allied ground army. Use Target Painter on high-priority targets. Combine with Multigunners for anti-air and anti-infantry support, and with Athena Cannons for long-range bombardment.
- Multigunner:
- Counters: Highly versatile. In anti-infantry mode, it shreds infantry. In anti-air mode, it's a potent anti-aircraft unit.
- Countered By: Dedicated anti-vehicle units (e.g., Soviet Hammer Tank, Imperial Tsunami Tank) when in anti-infantry mode, or anti-infantry units when in anti-air mode.
- Synergies: Essential for any Allied army. Keep them near Guardian Tanks to provide flexible support. Garrisoning them in a Multigunner IFV creates a powerful mobile anti-air/anti-infantry platform.
- Vindicator:
- Counters: Structures, massed ground units, and lightly armored vehicles. Their bombs deal heavy area-of-effect damage.
- Countered By: Any anti-air unit (e.g., Soviet Flak Trooper, Imperial Rocket Angel, Allied Multigunner).
- Synergies: Best used in groups for bombing runs. Combine with Apollo Fighters for air superiority to protect them from enemy aircraft.
- Athena Cannon:
- Counters: Structures and slow-moving ground units from extreme range. Its "Force Field" ability provides temporary invulnerability.
- Countered By: Fast-moving units that can close the distance (e.g., Imperial Striker VX, Soviet Sickle), and air units.
- Synergies: Provides crucial long-range support. Protect with Guardian Tanks and Multigunners. Use the Force Field to absorb critical damage during an assault or retreat.
Empire of the Rising Sun
The Empire relies on speed, transformation, and advanced technology. Their units are often fragile but highly mobile and capable of devastating burst damage, particularly with their unique transformations.
- Imperial Warrior:
- Counters: Early game infantry, lightly armored vehicles. Their "Banzai Charge" increases their speed and attack power.
- Countered By: Anti-infantry vehicles (e.g., Allied Guardian Tank, Soviet Sickle), and units with area-of-effect attacks.
- Synergies: Excellent for early harassment and capturing structures. Pair with Tankbusters for anti-vehicle support, or with Sudden Impact units for a combined assault.
- Tankbuster:
- Counters: All ground vehicles, especially heavily armored ones. Their "Magnetic Grenade" ability temporarily disables enemy vehicles.
- Countered By: Anti-infantry units (e.g., Allied Peacekeeper, Soviet Conscript), and air units.
- Synergies: Essential anti-vehicle support. Keep them behind your Tsunami Tanks or King Oni to deal with enemy armor. Use Magnetic Grenade on high-threat targets like Apocalypse Tanks.
- Tsunami Tank:
- Counters: Most ground vehicles and structures. Its "Wave-Force Armor" provides temporary invulnerability.
- Countered By: Anti-tank infantry (e.g., Soviet Conscript with Molotovs, Allied Peacekeeper with anti-armor upgrade), and air units.
- Synergies: The main battle tank of the Empire. Combine with Rocket Angels for anti-air and anti-ground versatility, and with Tankbusters for dedicated anti-armor. Use Wave-Force Armor to push through chokepoints or escape dangerous situations.
- Rocket Angel:
- Counters: Highly versatile. In anti-air mode, they excel against aircraft. In anti-ground mode, they are effective against infantry and light vehicles.
- Countered By: Dedicated anti-air units when in anti-ground mode (e.g., Soviet Flak Trooper), or anti-infantry units when in anti-air mode.
- Synergies: Invaluable for flexible air and ground support. Keep them near your Tsunami Tanks to provide immediate anti-air or anti-infantry cover. Their "Laser Chains" ability can disable enemy vehicles.
- King Oni:
- Counters: All ground units and structures. Its "Bull Rush" ability allows it to charge through enemy lines, dealing massive damage.
- Countered By: Massed air units, especially Allied Vindicators or Soviet Kirov Airships, and concentrated anti-armor infantry.
- Synergies: The ultimate Empire ground unit. Protect with Rocket Angels and Tankbusters. Use Bull Rush to break enemy formations and destroy key defensive structures.
