Town & Base Management
Effective Town & Base Management is crucial for sustained success in Company of Heroes 3. Your base isn't just a deployment point; it's the heart of your operations, providing vital resources, unit upgrades, and strategic advantages. Mastering its functions will ensure your forces are always prepared for the challenges ahead.
The Main Base Hub
Upon entering your main base, you'll be greeted by a central menu offering several key options. These are your primary interaction points for managing your growing army and resources.
- Recruit Units: This is where you'll train new squads and vehicles. Access the "Recruit" tab and select from available units. Remember to check your population cap and resource requirements (Manpower, Munitions, Fuel) before deploying.
- Upgrade Structures: Essential for unlocking advanced units and abilities. Navigate to the "Buildings" tab. For instance, upgrading your Barracks to a Heavy Barracks unlocks elite infantry like the Rifleman Squad (Veteran), while a Motor Pool upgrade to a Vehicle Production Facility grants access to tanks such such as the Sherman M4A3.
- Research & Development: Found under the "R&D" tab, this allows you to unlock powerful global buffs and unit-specific upgrades. Prioritize research based on your current tactical needs. For example, researching "Improved Logistics" can increase your resource generation, while "Advanced Armor Plating" significantly boosts vehicle survivability.
- Supply Depot: Your primary source for purchasing resources or exchanging surplus. Located near the main HQ, interact with the Quartermaster to access the "Supply Exchange" menu. You can trade excess Munitions for Fuel, or vice-versa, at varying rates. Keep an eye on market fluctuations for optimal trades.
- Defensive Emplacements: Crucial for protecting your base from enemy incursions. From the "Defenses" menu, you can construct various static defenses.
- Sandbag Walls: Cheap and quick to deploy, providing basic cover for infantry.
- Barbed Wire: Slows down enemy infantry, making them vulnerable to your defensive fire.
- Machine Gun Nests: Excellent for area denial and suppressing enemy infantry pushes.
- Anti-Tank Guns: Essential for countering early and mid-game vehicle threats. Position these strategically to cover key approach routes.
Forward Operating Bases (FOBs)
Beyond your main base, establishing Forward Operating Bases (FOBs) in contested territories is vital for extending your reach and maintaining map control. FOBs are smaller, more specialized structures that offer localized support.
Establishing an FOB
- Select a Strategic Location: Look for resource points (Munitions, Fuel, Manpower) or choke points that offer defensive advantages.
- Deploy Engineer Squad: Only Engineer squads can construct FOBs. Select your Engineer squad and click the "Construct FOB" ability.
- Choose FOB Type: Depending on your faction, you'll have different FOB options.
- Allied Forward Supply Depot: Provides a small trickle of resources and a medical station for healing nearby infantry.
- Wehrmacht Forward Command Post: Offers a reinforcement point for infantry and can be upgraded to deploy light vehicles.
FOB Management Tips
- Defend Your FOBs: FOBs are vulnerable. Always assign at least one infantry squad to defend a newly established FOB, and consider building light defenses like Sandbag Walls or Barbed Wire.
- Upgrade When Possible: Some FOBs can be upgraded to unlock additional capabilities, such as vehicle repair or advanced unit call-ins.
- Resource Collection: Position FOBs near resource points to automatically capture and secure them, boosting your overall income.
Strategic Resource Management
Resources are the lifeblood of your war effort. Efficient management is paramount.
- Manpower: Used for recruiting infantry and some light vehicles. Maintain a steady flow by capturing Manpower points and avoiding unnecessary unit losses.
- Munitions: Fuels unit abilities, upgrades, and some defensive structures. Prioritize capturing Munitions points, especially if your strategy relies on ability usage (e.g., grenades, artillery strikes).
- Fuel: Essential for deploying vehicles and heavy equipment, as well as critical base upgrades. Fuel points are often hotly contested, so be prepared to fight for them.
Remember, the dynamic nature of Company of Heroes 3 means your base and town management strategies will need to adapt to the evolving battlefield. Stay flexible, prioritize your needs, and always keep an eye on your resource income and expenditure.
