Corruption & Its Effects
In the harsh lands of the Exiled Lands, a sinister force known as Corruption permeates certain areas and activities, twisting both the environment and those who dare to delve into its depths. Understanding and managing Corruption is crucial for survival, especially for those seeking to harness the dark arts of Sorcery.
What is Corruption?
Corruption is a unique status effect in Conan Exiles that directly impacts your character's attributes and overall well-being. Unlike other debuffs, Corruption doesn't simply reduce your stats; it actively corrupts them, replacing your hard-earned attribute points with Corrupted versions. This can be a double-edged sword, as Corrupted attributes often come with powerful perks for Sorcerers, but at a significant cost to your health and stamina.
Sources of Corruption
Corruption can be acquired through various means, often in locations steeped in dark magic or ancient evils. Deliberate exposure is key for Sorcerers, while others must be wary of accidental accumulation.
- Corrupted Areas: Certain regions of the Exiled Lands are inherently corrupted. Spending time in these zones will slowly increase your Corruption level. Notable locations include:
- The Shrine of the Oracle (though primarily for lore, its surroundings can be corrupting).
- The Unnamed City and its various dungeons.
- Specific caves and ruins where dark rituals have taken place.
- Sorcerous Rituals: Engaging in Sorcery rituals, especially those performed at a Delving Bench or other arcane altars, will often inflict Corruption.
- Corrupted Enemies: Battling certain corrupted creatures or bosses can sometimes apply temporary or permanent Corruption.
- Consuming Corrupted Items: Some rare items or potions may grant Corruption, often with a corresponding benefit.
Effects of Corruption
The primary effect of Corruption is the transformation of your attribute points. For every 10 points of Corruption you accumulate, one of your attribute points (starting from the highest) will become Corrupted. This has several key implications:
Attribute Corruption
When an attribute point becomes Corrupted, it changes color on your character sheet and gains a unique property. While the base stat remains, the associated perks change dramatically.
- Health and Stamina Reduction: A significant downside to Corruption is the reduction in your maximum Health and Stamina. The more Corrupted points you have, the less robust your character becomes in terms of raw survivability.
- Corrupted Perks: This is where Corruption becomes a strategic choice for Sorcerers. Each attribute (Strength, Agility, Vitality, Grit, Expertise, Authority) gains a new set of perks at 10, 20, 30, 40, and 50 points when Corrupted. These perks are often powerful and synergize with Sorcery, offering benefits like increased spell damage, reduced spell cost, or unique magical abilities. For example, Corrupted Strength might offer bonuses to spell penetration, while Corrupted Vitality could enhance magical healing.
Visual and Auditory Cues
As your Corruption level increases, you'll notice subtle (and not-so-subtle) changes to your character and the game world:
- Visual Distortion: Your character's skin may take on a pallid or sickly hue, and dark veins might become visible.
- Auditory Hallucinations: Whispers and unsettling sounds may become more frequent, especially in highly corrupted areas.
Managing Corruption
While Sorcerers actively seek Corruption, other players will want to mitigate its effects. Even Sorcerers need to manage their Corruption to avoid becoming too fragile.
Reducing Corruption
There are several ways to cleanse yourself of Corruption:
- Dancers: The most common and effective method. Placing a Dancer thrall in your base and standing near them will slowly remove Corruption. Higher tier Dancers (e.g., Tier 3 or Named) are more efficient. Ensure your Dancer is active and not assigned to a different task.
- Certain Food and Potions: A few rare consumables can reduce Corruption, though they are generally less efficient than Dancers.
- Religious Altars: Praying at certain religious altars might offer minor Corruption reduction, depending on the deity.
Strategic Corruption for Sorcerers
For those embracing the path of Sorcery, Corruption is not a debuff but a resource to be managed. The goal is to accumulate enough Corruption to unlock desired Corrupted Perks without sacrificing too much Health and Stamina.
- Identify Key Corrupted Perks: Before embarking on your corrupted journey, research which Corrupted Perks align with your desired Sorcery build. For instance, if you're focusing on offensive spells, you might prioritize Corrupted Strength or Agility.
- Targeted Corruption: Instead of passively waiting, actively seek out corrupted areas or perform rituals to gain Corruption. The Delving Bench is an excellent tool for this, as many of its crafting recipes involve a Corruption cost.
- Balance with Cleansing: Once you've reached your desired level of Corruption for specific perks, use Dancers to maintain that level. You don't want to over-corrupt and become too vulnerable. A common strategy is to corrupt attributes up to 30 or 40 points, then use a Dancer to keep it there, preventing further Health/Stamina loss while retaining the powerful perks.
- Gear Considerations: Look for armor or items that might mitigate the Health/Stamina loss from Corruption, or enhance your magical abilities further to compensate.
Mastering Corruption is a nuanced aspect of Conan Exiles, offering unique build opportunities for Sorcerers and a constant challenge for traditional warriors. Understanding its mechanics is vital for thriving in the Exiled Lands.
