Religion & Altars

In the harsh lands of the Exiled Lands, faith can be a powerful tool for survival and dominance. Choosing a deity to worship and constructing their altars grants you access to unique crafting recipes, powerful blessings, and even the ability to summon devastating Avatars. This guide will walk you through the process of establishing your religious practice.

Choosing Your Deity

Your journey into religion begins with selecting a god to follow. There are several deities available, each offering distinct advantages. You can learn about a religion by interacting with specific NPCs or by finding religious teachers in the world. While you can learn multiple religions, you can only actively worship one at a time by building their primary altar.

  • Crom: The silent god. Crom offers no blessings or altars, as he cares not for the pleas of mortals. Choosing Crom means you forgo religious benefits entirely.
  • Ymir: God of the Frost Giants. Worshipers gain access to powerful ice-based weapons and armor.
  • Set: God of Serpents. Followers can craft venomous weapons and antidotes, and gain resistance to poison.
  • Derketo: Goddess of Lust and Death. Her worship grants access to potent potions, poisons, and seductive tools.
  • Mitra: God of Justice and Light. Mitra's followers can craft healing items and powerful holy weapons.
  • Yog: God of the Empty Maw. Worshipers gain access to unique food-based buffs and tools for harvesting flesh.
  • Zath: God of the Spider. Followers can craft potent venoms and spider-silk armor.

Building Your First Altar

Once you've chosen a deity, your next step is to construct their Tier 1 Altar. These altars are relatively inexpensive and can be placed almost anywhere. Building an altar unlocks basic religious crafting recipes and allows you to start accumulating "favor" with your chosen god.

  1. Learn the Religion: Find a religious teacher for your chosen deity. For example:
    • Ymir: Speak with the Nordheimer NPCs in the snowy regions, particularly around the Frozen North.
    • Set: Encounter Setite cultists in the desert, often found in camps like the Den.
    • Mitra: Find Mitra priests in settlements like the Sepermeru or the Mitraen Shrine near the river.
    • Yog: Locate Yog priests in the jungle, especially around the Black Galleon.
  2. Gather Resources: Each Tier 1 Altar requires specific materials. For example:
    • Altar of Ymir (Tier 1): 50 Stone, 50 Wood, 10 Iron Bar.
    • Altar of Set (Tier 1): 50 Stone, 50 Wood, 10 Iron Bar.
    • Altar of Mitra (Tier 1): 50 Stone, 50 Wood, 10 Iron Bar.
  3. Craft the Altar: Open your crafting menu (default 'I' key), navigate to the "Religious" tab, and select your chosen altar. Place it in a suitable location within your base.

Upgrading Your Altar

To unlock more powerful religious items and eventually summon an Avatar, you'll need to upgrade your altar through three tiers. Each upgrade requires more advanced materials and a dedicated Priest Thrall.

Tier 2 Altar

Upgrading to Tier 2 significantly expands your crafting options.

  1. Acquire a Tier 1 Priest Thrall: These can be found in various camps and dungeons. Look for unique named NPCs or generic "Priest" thralls. For example:
    • Ymir Priest: Found in Nordheimer camps in the Frozen North.
    • Set Priest: Often found in the Den or other Setite camps.
    • Mitra Priest: Located in Sepermeru or the Mitraen Shrine.
  2. Break the Thrall: Capture the Priest Thrall using a Truncheon and Fiber Bindings, then break their will on a Wheel of Pain.
  3. Gather Resources: Tier 2 altars require more refined materials. For example:
    • Altar of Ymir (Tier 2): 100 Stone, 100 Wood, 20 Iron Bar, 5 Steel Bar.
    • Altar of Set (Tier 2): 100 Stone, 100 Wood, 20 Iron Bar, 5 Steel Bar.
  4. Place the Priest: Interact with your Tier 1 Altar and place the Tier 1 Priest Thrall into its designated slot. This will unlock the Tier 2 Altar recipe in your crafting menu.
  5. Upgrade: Select the Tier 2 Altar recipe from your crafting menu while interacting with your Tier 1 Altar.

Tier 3 Altar (Sanctuary)

The final altar upgrade, often called a Sanctuary, unlocks the most potent religious items and the ability to craft the True Name of God, a prerequisite for summoning an Avatar.

  1. Acquire a Tier 3 Priest Thrall: These are rarer and often found in more dangerous locations or as boss drops.
    • Ymir Priest (Tier 3): Can be found in the Temple of Frost or other high-level Nordheimer areas.
    • Set Priest (Tier 3): Often found in the Wine Cellar dungeon or the Black Galleon.
  2. Break the Thrall: As with Tier 1, break their will on a Wheel of Pain.
  3. Gather Resources: Tier 3 altars demand significant resources, including rare components. For example:
    • Sanctuary of Ymir (Tier 3): 200 Stone, 200 Wood, 50 Iron Bar, 20 Steel Bar, 10 Hardened Steel Bar, 5 Black Ice.
    • Sanctuary of Set (Tier 3): 200 Stone, 200 Wood, 50 Iron Bar, 20 Steel Bar, 10 Hardened Steel Bar, 5 Snake Venom.
  4. Place the Priest: Interact with your Tier 2 Altar and place the Tier 3 Priest Thrall into its designated slot. This will unlock the Tier 3 Altar recipe.
  5. Upgrade: Select the Tier 3 Altar recipe from your crafting menu while interacting with your Tier 2 Altar.

Religious Offerings and Favor

To craft religious items and eventually the True Name of God, you'll need to offer specific items at your altar to gain "favor" with your deity. The type of offering varies by god:

  • Ymir: Offers of Human Flesh or Demon Blood.
  • Set: Offers of Human Flesh or Serpentman Poison.
  • Mitra: Offers of Human Hearts or Purified Flesh.
  • Yog: Offers of Human Flesh or Unblemished Human Meat.

Simply place the offering item into the altar's inventory and activate the "Sacrifice" option. The more valuable the offering, the more favor you gain.

Summoning an Avatar

The ultimate expression of faith is summoning your god's Avatar. This is a devastating, but temporary, force that can lay waste to enemy bases. It requires significant preparation and resources.

  1. Craft the True Name of God: At your Tier 3 Sanctuary, with a Tier 3 Priest Thrall, you can craft the True Name of God for your deity. This item requires a large amount of religious favor and rare components.
  2. Activate the True Name: Once crafted, equip the True Name of God and use it. This will initiate the Avatar summoning sequence.
  3. Control the Avatar: You will temporarily take control of the colossal Avatar, which has immense destructive power. Use it wisely, as its duration is limited.

Important Note: Summoning an Avatar is a server-wide event and will alert all players to your location and intentions. Be prepared for retaliation!
