Mounts & Riding
Traversing the vast and dangerous Exiled Lands can be a daunting task on foot. Fortunately, the gods have blessed some with the knowledge to tame and ride majestic steeds, drastically improving travel speed and even offering a unique combat advantage. This guide will walk you through the essential steps to acquire, train, and use your very own mount.
Acquiring a Foal
The journey to riding begins with a humble foal. These young horses are found in specific regions of the Exiled Lands. The most common and accessible location for finding foals is the Highlands, particularly around the areas of the Shattered Springs and the plains north of the Den. Look for small, skittish horse models that can be picked up.
- Location Strategy: Focus your search in grassy, open areas. Foals are often found grazing near adult horses. Be prepared for potential encounters with hostile wildlife or NPCs in these regions.
- Gathering: Simply approach a foal and interact with it (default 'E' key on PC) to pick it up. It will be added to your inventory as a "Foal."
Building a Stable
Once you have a foal, you'll need a place to raise it. The Stable is a crucial crafting station for this purpose. To unlock the Stable, you must first learn the "Apprentice Tamer" feat. This feat is typically available early in your progression, often around level 10-15, and can be found in the Survival or Exploration knowledge trees.
- Crafting the Stable:
- Materials: The Stable requires basic building materials such as Wood, Stone, and Twine. The exact quantities can be viewed in your crafting menu once the feat is learned.
- Placement: Place your Stable within your claimed territory. Consider placing it near your main base for easy access.
Taming Your Foal
With a Stable constructed, you can now begin the taming process. Taming a foal requires patience and a steady supply of food.
- Place Foal in Stable: Interact with your Stable and place the "Foal" item into its inventory slots.
- Provide Food: Foals require specific food items to grow into adult horses. The most effective food for rapid growth and good stats is Plant Fiber. While other plant-based foods might work, Plant Fiber is abundant and highly efficient. Place a generous stack of Plant Fiber into the Stable's inventory alongside the foal.
- Wait: The taming process takes real-world time. The duration can vary depending on the food provided and server settings. Regularly check on your foal and replenish its food supply as needed.
- Retrieve Adult Horse: Once the taming process is complete, the "Foal" item in the Stable will transform into an "Adult Horse." You can then retrieve your new mount from the Stable's inventory.
Riding Your Mount
An adult horse is ready to be ridden, but it requires a saddle. Saddles are crafted at the Tanner or Armorer's Bench, depending on the type of saddle.
- Crafting a Saddle:
- Feats: You'll need to learn the "Saddler" feat to craft basic saddles. More advanced saddles might require additional feats.
- Materials: Saddles typically require Leather, Thick Leather, and sometimes other resources like Iron Bars or Silk.
- Equipping the Saddle: Open your horse's inventory (by interacting with it) and drag the saddle into the designated saddle slot.
- Mounting: Once a saddle is equipped, approach your horse and press the interact key (default 'E' on PC) to mount it.
Mount Combat and Utility
Riding a mount offers significant advantages beyond faster travel:
- Increased Speed: Drastically reduces travel time across the map, making exploration and resource gathering more efficient.
- Mount Combat: While mounted, you can wield one-handed weapons (swords, axes, maces) and spears. This allows for hit-and-run tactics, trampling enemies, and maintaining distance from dangerous foes. Two-handed weapons and bows cannot be used while mounted.
- Trampling: Your horse can damage and knock down smaller enemies by simply running over them.
- Inventory Space: Your horse has its own inventory, providing extra carrying capacity for loot and resources.
- Stamina: Both you and your horse have stamina bars. Sprinting and attacking while mounted will consume your horse's stamina. Allow it to rest to regenerate.
Caring for Your Mount
Your horse is a valuable asset and requires some care:
- Feeding: While not actively taming, horses still benefit from being fed. Placing food like Plant Fiber or other plant-based items in their inventory will keep them healthy and can even provide temporary buffs.
- Healing: If your horse takes damage in combat, its health will regenerate over time. You can also use healing items on your horse, similar to how you heal yourself.
- Protection: When dismounted, your horse can still be attacked by enemies. Consider leaving it in a safe location or within your base's defenses when not actively riding.
