Troubleshooting & Common Issues
Even the most seasoned Exiles can encounter frustrating hiccups in the unforgiving lands. This section aims to equip you with solutions to common problems, ensuring your journey through the Exiled Lands is as smooth as possible.
Connectivity & Server Issues
One of the most frequent frustrations in Conan Exiles, especially in multiplayer, revolves around connectivity.
Lag and High Ping
Experiencing significant delays between your actions and the game's response can be deadly. Here's how to address it:
- Check Your Internet Connection: Ensure your internet connection is stable and fast. A wired Ethernet connection is always preferable to Wi-Fi for gaming.
- Server Region: When joining an online server, always prioritize servers in your geographical region. Playing on a server across the globe will inherently lead to higher ping. You can filter servers by region in the "Play Online" menu.
- Server Population: High server population can sometimes contribute to lag. Try joining a less populated server if available.
- Background Applications: Close any unnecessary applications running in the background that might be consuming bandwidth (e.g., streaming services, large downloads).
- Router Restart: A simple router and modem restart can often resolve temporary network issues.
- Contact Server Admin: If playing on a private server, reach out to the server administrator. They may be experiencing issues on their end or have specific recommendations.
Failure to Connect to Server
If you're unable to join a server, consider these steps:
- Verify Game Files:
- Steam: Right-click Conan Exiles in your Steam Library.
- Select "Properties."
- Go to the "Local Files" tab.
- Click "Verify integrity of game files..." This will check for corrupted or missing files and redownload them.
- Firewall/Antivirus: Ensure your firewall or antivirus software isn't blocking Conan Exiles. You may need to add an exception for the game.
- Server Status: Check official Conan Exiles forums or community hubs for server status updates. The server you're trying to join might be down for maintenance or experiencing issues.
- Router Settings: Some routers have strict NAT types that can interfere with online gaming. Consult your router's manual or ISP for information on port forwarding if this is a persistent issue.
Performance & Graphics
Conan Exiles can be demanding on hardware. Optimizing your settings is key to a smooth experience.
Low FPS (Frames Per Second)
Choppy gameplay can ruin immersion and make combat difficult. Here's how to improve your frame rate:
- Adjust Graphics Settings: This is the most impactful step.
- Navigate to "Settings" -> "Graphics" in the main menu.
- Start by lowering "View Distance," "Shadow Quality," and "Post Processing" to medium or low. These often have the biggest impact.
- Experiment with "Texture Quality" and "Effects Quality."
- Consider disabling "Motion Blur" and "Bloom" as they can sometimes impact performance without significantly enhancing visuals.
- Set "Foliage Quality" and "Terrain Quality" to lower values, especially in dense jungle or forest areas.
- Update Graphics Drivers: Outdated graphics drivers are a common cause of poor performance. Visit your GPU manufacturer's website (NVIDIA, AMD, Intel) to download the latest drivers.
- Close Background Programs: As with lag, other applications can consume valuable CPU and GPU resources.
- Resolution Scaling: In "Graphics" settings, try lowering "Resolution Scale." While it can make the game appear blurrier, it significantly reduces the rendering load.
- Hardware Upgrade: If all else fails and your hardware is significantly below the recommended specifications, a hardware upgrade (especially your GPU or CPU) might be necessary.
Crashes to Desktop
Unexpected game closures can be incredibly frustrating, especially if you lose progress.
- Verify Game Files: (See "Failure to Connect to Server" above). Corrupted files are a prime suspect for crashes.
- Update Drivers: Ensure your graphics drivers, as well as other system drivers (chipset, audio), are up to date.
- Overheating: Monitor your CPU and GPU temperatures using software like HWMonitor. Overheating components can cause instability and crashes. Ensure your PC has adequate cooling.
- Mod Conflicts: If you are using mods, disable them one by one to identify if a specific mod is causing the crash. Outdated or incompatible mods are a frequent culprit.
- Reinstall Game: As a last resort, a clean reinstallation of Conan Exiles can sometimes resolve persistent crashing issues. Remember to back up any single-player save files if you wish to keep them.
Gameplay & Mechanics
Sometimes, issues aren't technical but relate to how the game behaves.
Thralls Not Following/Attacking
Your loyal companions are essential, but they can sometimes be unresponsive.
- Check Stance: Ensure your thrall is set to the correct combat stance.
- Access the thrall's radial menu (hold E by default).
- Select "Behavior."
- Set "Guard Mode" to "Attack All" or "Attack Enemies."
- Ensure "Follow Distance" is appropriate for your playstyle.
- Stuck Thrall: Thralls can get stuck on terrain. Try moving a short distance away or using the "Teleport to Me" option in their radial menu if they are out of sight.
- Thrall Limit: Be aware of the thrall limit on servers. If you exceed it, older thralls may despawn.
- Server Restart: On private servers, a server restart can sometimes fix thrall AI issues.
Resource Nodes Not Spawning
If you're finding areas barren of resources that should be there:
- Server Settings: On private servers, administrators can adjust resource respawn rates. If you're on such a server, consult with the admin.
- Player Activity: In highly populated areas, other players might be farming the nodes before you get there. Consider exploring less frequented regions like the areas around the Shattered Springs for Ironstone or the Volcano for Obsidian and Star Metal.
- Server Restart: A server restart often forces resource nodes to respawn.
Lost Items After Death
Dying and losing your hard-earned gear is part of the Exiled Lands, but sometimes items disappear unexpectedly.
- Corpse Location: Your corpse marker on the map (a skull icon) indicates where your items should be. Sometimes, bodies can clip through terrain or fall into inaccessible areas.
- Server Settings: Some servers have settings that reduce or remove item retention on death. Check the server rules if playing online.
- "Ghost" Corpse: Occasionally, your corpse might be invisible but still interactable. Try hovering your cursor over the general area of your death.
- Rollback: If a server experiences a crash shortly after your death, it might roll back to a previous save state, potentially causing your items to be in a different location or to despawn.
