Weather & Environmental Hazards
The Exiled Lands are a harsh mistress, and surviving its diverse biomes requires more than just a sharp blade. Environmental hazards, from scorching deserts to freezing mountains, can be as deadly as any Cimmerian warrior. Understanding and preparing for these conditions is paramount to your survival and progression.
Temperature Extremes: Heat and Cold
The most pervasive environmental threats are extreme temperatures. Your character's temperature gauge, visible near your health bar, indicates your current thermal state. Staying within the "comfortable" range is key; prolonged exposure to extreme heat or cold will inflict damage over time and can lead to death.
Combating Heat
The southern deserts, particularly the expansive Sandswept Ruins and the volcanic Volcano region, are notorious for their oppressive heat. Without proper preparation, your health will quickly dwindle.
- Hydration: Always carry plenty of Waterskins filled with fresh water. Consuming water regularly helps mitigate heat effects.
- Cooling Foods: Certain foods offer temporary cooling buffs. Look for items like Ice (found in colder regions, but useful everywhere), Berry Pulp, or crafted dishes like Shaved Ice.
- Armor: Equip light armor with a high "Heat Resistance" rating. Early game options include Light Armor sets, while later, crafted sets like the Silent Legion Armor (crafted at the Blacksmith's Bench with Silent Legion Recipe) or the Khari Steel Armor (found in the Sunken City) offer excellent protection.
- Shelter: Seek shade under trees, rock overhangs, or inside player-built structures. Building a base with Sandstone Building Pieces can offer some respite.
- Temperature-Regulating Potions: Advanced You can craft Frost Lotus Powder into potions at an Alchemist's Bench to gain temporary cold buffs.
Combating Cold
The northern reaches of the Exiled Lands, including the Frozen North, the Highlands, and the treacherous Mount Cimmeria, are plagued by biting cold. Hypothermia is a constant threat.
- Warmth Buffs: Consuming Spiced Food (crafted at a Campfire or Improved Campfire with Spice) provides a temporary warmth buff. Mulled Wine is another excellent option.
- Torches: Holding a Torch provides a small but noticeable warmth bonus, crucial for early game survival.
- Armor: Prioritize heavy armor with high "Cold Resistance." Early on, Heavy Armor sets are your best bet. As you progress, aim for sets like the Vanir Heavy Armor (crafted at the Armorer's Bench) or the legendary Hyperborean Slaver Armor (found in the Black Keep).
- Campfires & Braziers: Standing near a lit Campfire, Brazier, or Standing Torch provides significant warmth. Build these strategically around your northern bases.
- Temperature-Regulating Potions: Just as with heat, Frost Lotus Powder can be used to craft potions that provide temporary heat buffs.
Sandstorms
The desert regions are prone to devastating sandstorms. These aren't just visual effects; they are lethal environmental events that can catch unprepared exiles off guard.
- Warning Signs: A distinct wind sound and a darkening sky usually precede a sandstorm. Pay attention to these cues.
- Effects: Sandstorms drastically reduce visibility, inflict continuous damage over time, and can even disorient your character.
- Shelter: The only reliable defense is to seek immediate shelter. Any enclosed structure, even a simple Sandstone Building Piece shack, will protect you. If caught outdoors, try to find a cave or a deep rock overhang.
- Sandstorm Mask: For emergencies or quick dashes, a Sandstorm Mask (crafted at the Tanner's Table with Thick Leather and Linen) offers temporary protection from the sandstorm's damage. However, it will not protect you indefinitely, and visibility remains poor.
Poison Gas
Certain areas, particularly the Sewer system beneath the Unnamed City and sections of the Swamp, contain pockets of deadly poison gas. This gas inflicts rapid damage and applies a potent poison debuff.
- Gas Mask: A Gas Mask (crafted at the Tanner's Table with Thick Leather, Glass, and Linen) is absolutely essential for traversing these areas. Without it, you will die very quickly.
- Antidotes: Always carry Antidotes (crafted at the Alchemist's Bench with Aloe Vera and Yellow Lotus Powder) to counteract any poison effects you might still incur, even with a mask, or if your mask breaks.
Corruption
While not strictly "weather," Corruption is a pervasive environmental hazard found in dark, ancient, or cursed locations like the Dregs, the Unnamed City, and various dungeons. Corruption reduces your maximum health and stamina, making combat and exploration significantly harder.
- Warning: Your character will gain purple corruption streaks on their body, and a distinct sound effect will play when entering corrupted areas.
- Removing Corruption:
- Dancers: The most effective way to remove Corruption is to be near a Dancer Thrall. Place a Dancer in your base, and standing near them will slowly cleanse your Corruption.
- Food/Drink: Certain rare foods or drinks found in corrupted areas might offer minor corruption removal, but Dancers are the primary method.
- Leaving Corrupted Areas: Simply leaving the corrupted zone will stop the accumulation, but existing corruption will only be removed by a Dancer.
General Survival Tips
- Map Awareness: Familiarize yourself with the biome map. Knowing what to expect before you venture into a new region is half the battle.
- Resource Gathering: Always gather extra resources for crafting survival gear. Don't wait until you're freezing to death to realize you need Thick Hide for heavy armor.
- Base Building: Strategically placed outposts or full bases in different biomes can act as safe havens and resupply points, allowing you to quickly adapt to local conditions.
- Attribute Points: Investing points into Survival can slightly increase your resistance to environmental effects, though armor and specific items remain more impactful.
