Difficulty Settings & Accessibility
Control offers a unique approach to difficulty, allowing players to tailor the experience to their preferences rather than relying on traditional pre-set difficulty levels. This guide will walk you through how to utilize these powerful accessibility options to fine-tune your journey through the Oldest House.
Adjusting Your Experience: Assist Mode
Unlike many RPGs, Control doesn't feature a "Normal," "Hard," or "Easy" mode. Instead, it provides a robust "Assist Mode" within its accessibility settings. This allows you to individually toggle and adjust various parameters to make the game as challenging or as forgiving as you desire. This is particularly useful for players who might struggle with certain aspects of combat or exploration but still want to experience the rich narrative and world of the FBC.
- Accessing Assist Mode:
- From the main menu or during gameplay, navigate to the Options menu.
- Select Accessibility.
- You will find the Assist Mode options here.
- Key Assist Mode Settings:
- Invincibility: Toggling this on makes Jesse Faden immune to all damage. This is perfect for players who want to focus purely on the story, exploration, or simply enjoy the spectacle of combat without the threat of death. It can be particularly helpful during challenging boss encounters like the fight against Salvador in the Maintenance Sector or the final confrontation in Polaris.
- One-Hit Kills: Enabling this option means all enemies, regardless of their type (from basic Hiss Charged to formidable Hiss Elevated), will be defeated with a single hit from any of Jesse's Service Weapon forms or abilities. This dramatically speeds up combat and can be a fun way to feel incredibly powerful.
- Energy Recovery Speed: This slider allows you to adjust how quickly Jesse's Energy recharges. Energy is crucial for using all of Jesse's supernatural abilities like Launch, Shield, and Evade. Increasing this speed means more frequent ability usage, making combat flow more smoothly and giving you more tactical options. If you find yourself constantly waiting for your energy to regenerate during intense firefights in areas like the Containment Sector, consider boosting this.
- Aim Assist: This setting provides varying degrees of assistance when aiming your Service Weapon. If you're having trouble landing shots on fast-moving enemies or hitting weak points, increasing aim assist can significantly improve your combat effectiveness.
- Auto-Aim: A more aggressive form of aim assistance that will automatically snap your reticle to enemies. Combine this with One-Hit Kills for a truly effortless combat experience.
Strategic Use of Assist Mode
Don't view Assist Mode as "cheating." It's a powerful tool designed to make Control accessible to a wider audience and allow players to enjoy the game on their own terms. Here are some strategies for its use:
- Story Focus: If you're primarily interested in the narrative and lore of the Oldest House, enabling Invincibility and One-Hit Kills will allow you to breeze through combat and focus on collecting documents, case files, and experiencing the main quests like Directorial Override or My Brother's Keeper without interruption.
- Exploration & Collectibles: Struggling to reach a hidden area because of a challenging enemy patrol? Temporarily turn on Invincibility to clear the path and grab that elusive Research & Records Collectible or a new Weapon Mod.
- Boss Fights: Some boss encounters, particularly in the later game or during the Expeditions, can be quite demanding. If you're stuck, consider activating Invincibility for that specific fight to progress, then disable it afterwards if you wish to return to a more challenging experience.
- Fine-Tuning Combat: If you enjoy the challenge but find certain aspects frustrating, experiment with individual settings. For example, you might keep damage enabled but boost Energy Recovery Speed to allow for more liberal use of your powers, or increase Aim Assist if you're struggling with controller precision.
Remember, you can toggle these settings on and off at any point during your playthrough, even mid-combat. Feel free to experiment and find the perfect balance that makes your time in the Federal Bureau of Control enjoyable and engaging.
