Puzzle Solutions
The Oldest House is a labyrinth of shifting architecture and cryptic challenges. While combat will test your reflexes, many of the game's most memorable moments, and indeed, its progression, hinge on solving environmental puzzles. This section will guide you through the most intricate and potentially frustrating brain-teasers, ensuring you can continue your journey as the Director without unnecessary delays.
Black Rock Quarry: The Power Core Conundrum
The Black Rock Quarry presents a significant obstacle early in your journey: restoring power to the NSC Power Plant. This involves locating and installing three Black Rock Power Cores. The area is fraught with Hiss, so be prepared for engagements as you navigate.
- Core 1: The Lower Level
- From the Quarry entrance, head down to the lowest level.
- Look for a small, elevated platform accessible via a short flight of stairs or by levitating.
- The first Black Rock Power Core is resting on this platform. Grab it using your Launch ability.
- Core 2: The High Ledge
- Ascend to the middle level of the Quarry.
- Scan the walls for a high ledge or alcove. This core is often tucked away and requires a good vantage point.
- Use Levitate to reach this ledge. The second Black Rock Power Core will be waiting there.
- Core 3: The Conveyor Belt
- Locate the large conveyor belt system within the Quarry.
- Follow the belt until you find the third Black Rock Power Core. It might be partially obscured or on a moving section, so timing your grab with Launch is crucial.
- Installation: Once all three cores are acquired, proceed to the NSC Power Plant. You'll find three empty slots on the central console. Use Launch to place each core into its designated slot, restoring power and allowing you to progress.
NSC Power Plant: The Cooling Pump Puzzle
After restoring power, you'll encounter a series of cooling pumps that need to be activated in a specific sequence to prevent a meltdown. This puzzle requires careful observation and quick action.
- The Sequence: The correct sequence is indicated by the lights on the pumps themselves. A flashing red light signifies the next pump in the sequence.
- Activation:
- Start by activating the pump with the flashing red light.
- Immediately look for the next pump that begins to flash red.
- Activate that pump, and continue this pattern.
- Timing is Key: You have a limited window to activate each pump before the sequence resets. If you fail, the pumps will reset, and you'll need to start over. Don't rush, but don't hesitate.
- Reward: Successfully activating all pumps in sequence will stabilize the NSC Power Plant and open the path forward.
Research Sector: The Light Switch Puzzle (Threshold Kids)
Deep within the Research Sector, you'll encounter a room with a peculiar light switch and a television playing the unsettling "Threshold Kids" show. This puzzle is less about logic and more about following subtle environmental cues.
- The Clue: Pay close attention to the "Threshold Kids" episode playing on the TV. The show will subtly hint at the number of times you need to interact with the light switch.
- Execution:
- Watch the TV segment carefully.
- When the show concludes or the relevant clue is given, interact with the light switch the indicated number of times. For example, if the show suggests "three times," flip the switch three times.
- If done correctly, the room will shift, revealing a hidden path or object.
- Common Pitfall: Many players overthink this puzzle. The solution is usually directly presented in the "Threshold Kids" segment. Don't look for complex patterns; listen to the show.
Maintenance Sector: The Furnace Puzzle
In the Maintenance Sector, you'll find a furnace that requires specific items to be thrown into it to cleanse an Object of Power. This puzzle often involves finding the correct "fuel" scattered around the immediate environment.
- Identifying the Items: The furnace will often emit a specific color or sound that hints at the type of item it requires. Look for objects in the room that match this description or seem out of place.
- Common Items:
- Red Barrels: Often found near industrial machinery.
- Hiss-Corrupted Objects: Sometimes, the furnace needs to consume objects that have been tainted by the Hiss.
- Specific Debris: Look for piles of rubble or unique-looking junk that stands out.
- The Process:
- Locate the required items using your Launch ability.
- Throw them into the furnace one by one.
- The furnace will react, often with a burst of energy or a change in its visual state, indicating success.
- Tip: If you're struggling, explore every nook and cranny of the immediate area. The items are rarely far from the furnace itself.
