Game Mechanics
Welcome, Core Keeper! Understanding the fundamental game mechanics is crucial for thriving in the cavernous depths. This section will guide you through the core systems, from basic survival to advanced crafting and combat strategies.
I. Core Survival
Your initial hours in Core Keeper will revolve around securing basic needs and establishing a foothold. Neglecting these can lead to a swift demise.
A. Hunger and Thirst
Your character has both a Hunger and Thirst meter. Allowing either to drop to zero will result in a steady loss of health. Keep an eye on these!
- Hydration:
- Early Game: The most accessible source of hydration is Water found in small puddles or larger underground lakes. Simply walk into it to drink.
- Mid-Game: Craft a Water Bottle at a Basic Crafting Table (requires 2x Copper Bar). This allows you to carry water for later use. Fill it by interacting with any water source.
- Late Game: Consider setting up a Rain Collector (requires 5x Wood, 3x Copper Bar) in an open area to passively gather water, especially useful for base hydration.
- Sustenance:
- Early Game: Forage for Mushrooms (found in Clay Caves) and hunt Slimes for Slime Meat. Both can be consumed raw, but cooking is always better.
- Cooking: Construct a Campfire (requires 4x Wood) to cook raw ingredients. Cooked food provides more hunger saturation and often grants temporary buffs. For example, cooking Slime Meat yields Cooked Slime, which restores more hunger.
- Farming: As you progress, cultivate Carrots and Bomb Peppers by planting their respective seeds in tilled soil (use a Hoe). This provides a sustainable food source.
B. Light and Exploration
The underground is dark and dangerous. Light sources are essential for visibility and deterring certain creatures.
- Torches: Your primary light source. Craft Torches (requires 1x Wood, 1x Slime) at a Basic Crafting Table. Place them frequently as you explore to illuminate pathways and prevent enemy spawns in lit areas.
- Lanterns: A more advanced, portable light source. Craft a Lantern (requires 3x Copper Bar, 1x Slime) at a Basic Crafting Table. Equip it in your off-hand slot for continuous light without needing to place torches.
- Mining: Use your Copper Pickaxe (initial tool) to break through dirt walls and mine ore veins. Prioritize mining Copper Ore and Tin Ore to upgrade your tools and craft essential items.
- Navigating the Fog of War: As you explore, the map will reveal itself. Pay attention to distinct biome changes, such as the transition from the Clay Caves to the Azeos' Wilderness or the Forgotten Ruins, as these often indicate new resources and challenges.
II. Crafting and Progression
Crafting is the backbone of Core Keeper, allowing you to create tools, weapons, armor, and structures to enhance your survival and combat capabilities.
A. Crafting Stations
Different items require specific crafting stations. Here's a breakdown of early-game essentials:
- Basic Crafting Table: Your first and most versatile crafting station.
- Construction: Requires 8x Wood.
- Key Early Crafts: Torches, Wooden Pickaxe, Copper Pickaxe, Copper Sword, Wooden Chest, Water Bottle.
- Furnace: Used for smelting raw ores into usable bars.
- Construction: Requires 10x Stone, 5x Wood.
- Process: Place raw Copper Ore or Tin Ore into the furnace. It will automatically smelt into Copper Bars or Tin Bars over time. Ensure you have fuel (Wood) in the furnace's fuel slot.
- Anvil: Essential for crafting metal tools, weapons, and armor.
- Construction: Requires 10x Copper Bar.
- Key Early Crafts: Tin Pickaxe, Tin Sword, Copper Armor Set (Helmet, Chestplate, Leggings).
B. Resource Gathering and Management
Efficient resource gathering is key to continuous progression.
- Ore Veins: Look for distinct colored veins in the walls. Copper Ore is reddish-brown, while Tin Ore is silvery-grey. These are found predominantly in the Clay Caves and Forgotten Ruins.
- Gemstones: Scarlet Ore (red) and Azure Ore (blue) are valuable gemstones used in more advanced crafting and for selling to the Merchant. They are rarer than basic ores.
- Wood: Obtained by chopping down trees with an axe. Essential for almost all early-game crafting.
- Stone: Mined from walls and rock formations. Used for crafting furnaces, walls, and other structures.
- Storage: Craft Wooden Chests (requires 8x Wood) to store your gathered resources. Organize them logically to avoid clutter.
III. Combat and Exploration
The underground is teeming with hostile creatures. Mastering combat and strategic exploration will ensure your survival.
A. Basic Combat
Combat in Core Keeper is real-time and relies on positioning and timing.
- Melee Weapons: Your primary offensive tools.
- Swords: Offer a balanced attack speed and damage. Start with a Wooden Sword, then upgrade to Copper Sword and Tin Sword.
- Axes: Slower attack speed but higher damage. Also useful for chopping wood.
- Ranged Weapons: Bows are excellent for engaging enemies from a distance.
- Wooden Bow: Your first ranged option. Requires Wooden Arrows (crafted from Wood and Slime).
- Strategy: Kite enemies by shooting and moving, especially against slower, high-damage foes.
- Dodging: Use your movement keys to avoid incoming attacks. Many enemies have predictable attack patterns.
- Armor: Equip armor sets like the Copper Armor Set to reduce incoming damage. Each piece provides a defense bonus.
B. Enemy Encounters
Be prepared for various enemy types as you delve deeper.
- Slimes: The most common enemy. They come in various sizes and colors, with larger ones dealing more damage. They drop Slime and Slime Meat.
- Larva: Small, fast-moving insects found in large groups. Can be overwhelming if not dealt with quickly. Drop Larva Meat and Larva Spike.
- Cavelings: Humanoid enemies with different variants (e.g., Caveling Brute, Caveling Shaman). Often found in camps or ruins. They can drop Ancient Gemstones and various equipment.
- Bosses: The true tests of your progression. Each biome has a unique boss that drops powerful loot and unlocks new areas or crafting recipes.
- Glurch the Abominous Mass: The first boss, found in the Clay Caves. A giant slime that splits into smaller slimes. Focus on dodging its jumps and attacking the main mass.
- Ghorm the Devourer: A massive worm boss found in the Azeos' Wilderness. Requires careful movement and ranged attacks to defeat.
C. World Exploration
The world of Core Keeper is procedurally generated, offering endless exploration.
- Biomes: Each biome has unique resources, enemies, and environmental hazards.
- Clay Caves: Starting biome, rich in Copper and Tin.
- Azeos' Wilderness: Lush, overgrown areas with new plant life and stronger enemies.
- Forgotten Ruins: Ancient structures with Cavelings and valuable loot.
- Portals: Discover and activate ancient portals to fast-travel between different areas of your world. This is crucial for efficient resource gathering and boss farming.
- Map Usage: Regularly check your map (default key 'M') to track your progress, mark points of interest, and locate discovered resources.
