Starting Areas/Biomes (e.g., Meadows, Forest)

Upon awakening in the cavernous depths of Core Keeper, you'll find yourself in one of several starting biomes, each offering unique challenges, resources, and early-game strategies. Understanding your immediate surroundings is crucial for survival and progression.

The Dirt Biome (Starting Zone)

This is your initial spawning point, a relatively safe and resource-rich area designed to ease you into the game's mechanics. It's characterized by soft dirt walls, scattered rocks, and an abundance of basic flora.

  • Key Resources:
    • Dirt: Easily mined with your starting Copper Pickaxe. Essential for crafting Dirt Walls (for base building) and filling in water.
    • Wood: Harvested from Small Trees and Large Trees. Crucial for crafting your first Workbench, Wooden Chests, and various tools.
    • Stone: Mined from Stone Deposits. Used for crafting Stone Walls, Furnaces, and early-game tools.
    • Copper Ore: Found in Copper Veins embedded in dirt or stone. This is your first metal resource, vital for upgrading tools and crafting Copper Bars at a Furnace.
    • Slime: Dropped by Orange Slimes. Used in crafting Slime Walls and later, more advanced items.
    • Heart Berries: These small, red berries grow on the ground. Consume them for a small health regeneration boost. Always gather these when you see them.
  • Early Game Strategy:
    1. Mine for Essentials: Immediately begin mining Dirt, Wood, and Stone. Aim for at least 50 of each to get started.
    2. Craft a Workbench: Your first priority should be crafting a Workbench (10 Wood). Place it down to unlock more crafting recipes.
    3. Upgrade Your Pickaxe: Once you have enough Copper Ore (typically 8 ore for 1 bar, then 3 bars for a pickaxe), smelt it into Copper Bars at a Furnace (crafted from 20 Stone at a Workbench) and craft a Copper Pickaxe. This will significantly speed up your mining.
    4. Establish a Small Base: Dig out a small, enclosed area and place Dirt Walls or Stone Walls to create a safe zone. Place a Wooden Chest (10 Wood) for storage.
    5. Explore Cautiously: The Dirt Biome is generally safe, but Orange Slimes will be your primary enemy. They are slow and easily defeated with your starting Copper Sword.
    6. Find the Core: Your ultimate goal in the starting area is to locate the Core. Follow the glowing trails of light on the ground; these often lead towards the Core and other points of interest.

The Clay Caves

Adjacent to the Dirt Biome, you'll often find the Clay Caves. This biome is characterized by reddish-brown clay walls and a slightly different set of resources.

  • Key Resources:
    • Clay: The primary resource, easily mined. Used for crafting Clay Walls, Clay Pots (for farming), and later, Clay Bricks.
    • Tin Ore: Look for Tin Veins embedded in the clay. Tin is the next tier of metal after copper and is essential for crafting stronger tools and armor.
    • Mushrooms: Various types of mushrooms can be found growing here, offering minor health or energy regeneration.
    • Larva: Small, weak enemies that drop Larva Meat, a basic food source.
  • Strategy:

Once you have a Copper Pickaxe, venturing into the Clay Caves becomes much more efficient. Prioritize gathering Tin Ore to upgrade your tools further. The Larva here are generally not a significant threat, but be mindful of larger groups.

The Azeos' Wilderness (Forest Biome)

This biome is usually found further out from the starting Dirt Biome, often past the Clay Caves or other transition zones. It's a lush, green area with dense foliage and new challenges.

  • Key Resources:
    • Wood (Forest Trees): Denser concentrations of trees, providing more wood.
    • Fiber: Harvested from Tall Grass. Essential for crafting Rope, Bows, and early armor.
    • Iron Ore: Look for Iron Veins. Iron is a significant upgrade from Tin and will be crucial for mid-game progression.
    • Poison Slimes: Green slimes that inflict a poison debuff. Be cautious when engaging them.
    • Cavelings: More aggressive humanoid enemies that can drop Caveling Gear and other useful items.
  • Strategy:

Before entering Azeos' Wilderness, ensure you have at least Tin tools and some basic armor. The enemies here are tougher, and the poison from Poison Slimes can be dangerous if you're unprepared. Focus on gathering Iron Ore and Fiber to craft better equipment. Establishing a small outpost with a Bed and Wooden Chest can be beneficial for respawning and storing loot closer to the action.
