Graphics Settings Optimization

Often, the simplest solution is to adjust your in-game graphics settings. Core Keeper, while charming, can be surprisingly demanding on older or less powerful systems.

  • Accessing Settings: From the main menu or in-game, press Escape and navigate to the Settings menu, then select Graphics.
  • Resolution: Try lowering your screen resolution. While it might make the game appear less sharp, it significantly reduces the load on your GPU. Experiment with resolutions like 1920x1080 or even 1280x720 if you're struggling.
  • Shadow Quality: Shadows are notoriously performance-intensive. Set Shadow Quality to Low or even Off. The visual impact is often minimal compared to the performance gain.

"Failed to Connect" or Disconnections

These messages often indicate a problem with network communication between players.

  • Check Internet Connection: Ensure both the host and all connecting players have a stable internet connection. A simple speed test can confirm this.
  • Restart Router/Modem: A classic IT solution, but often effective. Power cycle your network hardware.
  • Firewall Settings: Your operating system's firewall (e.g., Windows Defender Firewall) or third-party antivirus software might be blocking Core Keeper's connection.
    1. Windows Firewall: Search for "Windows Defender Firewall" in your Start menu.
    2. Click Allow an app or feature through Windows Defender Firewall.
    3. Click Change settings, then Allow another app....
    4. Browse to your Core Keeper executable (usually in SteamLibrary\steamapps\common\Core Keeper).
    5. Ensure both Private and Public networks are checked for Core Keeper.

"I Can't Break This Wall!"

Encountering unmineable walls is a common early-game frustration.

  • Pickaxe Tier: Different types of walls require progressively stronger pickaxes.
    • Dirt Walls, Clay Walls: Can be broken with a basic Copper Pickaxe.
    • Stone Walls: Requires a Tin Pickaxe or better.
    • Iron Walls: Demands an Iron Pickaxe or higher.
    • Scarlet Ore Walls: Only breakable with a Scarlet Pickaxe.
    • Octarine Ore Walls: Requires an Octarine Pickaxe.
    • Mythril Walls (Azeos' Wilderness): Needs a Mythril Pickaxe.

  • Boss Walls: Walls surrounding boss arenas (e.g., the Glurch's Lair, Ghorm's Maze entrance) are often indestructible until the boss is defeated or a specific trigger is met. Do not attempt to mine these; look for alternative paths or complete objectives.
  • Special Blocks: Some blocks, like those found in ancient cities or specific biomes, may require unique tools or abilities to interact with. For instance, some ancient ruins might require a specific item to activate a mechanism rather than a pickaxe.

Lost in the Labyrinthine Caves

The Core is vast, and it's easy to get disoriented.

  • Craft a Compass: Early on, craft a Compass at a Workbench using 1x Copper Bar and 1x Wood. This will show you your cardinal directions.
  • Use a Map: The in-game map (default key M) is your best friend. Explore to reveal more of it.
    • Map Markers: Place custom markers (right-click on the map) to denote important locations like your base, resource veins, or boss arenas. Use descriptive names like "Tin Vein" or "Ghorm Spawn."
    • Map Table: For a shared map experience in multiplayer, craft a Map Table. Any player interacting with it will share their explored map data, making group navigation much easier.
  • Torch Placement: Systematically place torches as you explore. Not only do they provide light, but they also serve as breadcrumbs, guiding you back to safety. Consider placing them on one side of a tunnel to indicate the direction back to base.
  • Path Paving: Lay down Wood Bridges, Stone Paths, or other flooring materials to create clear, safe pathways through frequently traveled areas. This also increases your movement speed!

Inventory Management Woes

Running out of space is a constant struggle for every Core Keeper.

  • Upgrade Backpack: Your initial backpack is small. Prioritize crafting the Small Backpack (10x Fiber, 5x Slime) and then the Large Backpack (10x Leather, 5x Iron Bar) at a Workbench to significantly increase your inventory slots.
  • Chests & Storage: Build plenty of Wooden Chests (6x Wood) or Storage Boxes (6x Wood, 2x Copper Bar) at your base. Organize them by resource type (e.g., "Ores," "Food," "Building Materials").
  • Automation & Conveyors: As you progress, utilize Conveyor Belts and Storage Boxes with Automated Arms to create automated sorting and storage systems, especially for farmed resources or mined ore.
  • Trash Can: Don't be afraid to use the Trash Can (default key Delete while hovering over an item) for truly unwanted items. Just be careful not to accidentally delete something important!
