Every character in Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled belongs to one of four speed classes, each with distinct advantages and disadvantages. Choosing the right character for a track or your playstyle is a key strategic decision.

Speed (Advanced)
- Characteristics: Highest top speed, excellent boost power.
- Disadvantages: Lowest acceleration, lowest turn stat.
- Best For: Experienced players who can consistently chain mini-turbos and maintain speed. Ideal for tracks with long straightaways and wide turns.
- Examples: Dingodile, Tiny Tiger, Papu Papu, N. Tropy, Crunch, Zem, Zam, Oxide, Krunk, Nash, Big Norm, Small Norm, Geary, Pasadena, Ebenezer Von Clutch, Rilla Roo, Yaya Panda, Hasty, King Chicken.
Acceleration (Intermediate)
- Characteristics: Balanced stats, good acceleration, decent top speed and turn.
- Disadvantages: No major weaknesses, but not excelling in any single area.
- Best For: Players who want a versatile character that can recover quickly from hits and navigate various track types.
- Examples: Crash, Coco, Dr. Neo Cortex, N. Gin, Komodo Joe, Pinstripe, Fake Crash, Nitros Oxide (Adventure Mode), Megamix, Emperor Velo XXVII.
Turn (Beginner)
- Characteristics: Highest turn stat, good acceleration.
- Disadvantages: Lowest top speed, lowest boost power.
- Best For: New players or those who struggle with tight turns. Excellent for technical tracks with many sharp corners.
- Examples: Polar, Pura, Ripper Roo, Penta Penguin, Baby Crash, Baby Coco, Spyro, Hunter, Gnasty Gnorc, Nina Cortex, Koala Kong, N. Brio, Tawna, Ami, Isabella, Megumi, Liz.
Balanced (Intermediate)
- Characteristics: Perfectly balanced stats across speed, acceleration, and turn.
- Disadvantages: No specific strengths or weaknesses.
- Best For: Players who prefer a neutral feel and adaptability to any track.
- Examples: Dr. N. Tropy (Classic), Rilla Roo (Classic). Note: In Nitro-Fueled, most characters fall into one of the other three categories, making 'Balanced' less distinct.
