The Art of Abduction

The Abduction Scheme is a high-risk, high-reward strategy in Crusader Kings III, allowing you to forcibly take control of another character. This can be used to gain leverage, secure a valuable heir, or simply to remove a troublesome individual from the political landscape.

To begin an Abduction Scheme, right-click on the character you wish to abduct and select "Start Scheme," then choose "Abduction." Similar to other schemes, your character's Intrigue skill is paramount. The success of the scheme is influenced by your Intrigue, the target's Awareness, and the presence of any Hooks you might have on the target or their guardians.

Your Spymaster is invaluable here. Assigning them to "Disrupt Schemes" in the target's realm can reduce their Awareness and increase your scheme's power. Conversely, assigning them to "Support Schemes" in your own realm can bolster your chances. The target's Opinion of you also plays a role; a friendly target is less likely to be successfully abducted without a fight.

Events will frequently occur during the scheme. These events present choices that can increase your scheme power, improve your chances of a successful abduction, or lead to negative outcomes. A failed abduction can result in imprisonment for your character, a significant drop in opinion with the target and their liege, and potentially even war. A successful abduction means the target is brought to your court, where you can then decide their fate. You might ransom them, force them into marriage, or even attempt to murder them.

Key Considerations for Abduction:

  • High Intrigue is essential. Consider characters with the "Schemer" or "Intrigue" education traits.
  • Utilize your Spymaster to either disrupt the target's awareness or support your scheme.
  • Having Hooks on the target or their liege can significantly increase success chance.
  • Be prepared for the consequences of failure, which can be severe.
  • Consider the target's liege and their potential reaction to the abduction.
