The world of Crusader Kings III is rife with intrigue, and your rivals will constantly be plotting against you, your family, and your realm. Countering these schemes requires vigilance, a skilled Spymaster, and a proactive approach to uncovering and thwarting your enemies' machinations.
The Spymaster's Role
Your Spymaster is your most valuable asset in the fight against intrigue. Ass them to 'Disrupt Schemes' in your capital or in a county where you suspect significant plotting. A high Intrigue skill for your Spymaster, along with a good opinion of you, will greatly increase their effectiveness.
Understanding Scheme Types
There are various types of schemes your enemies might employ: murder, seduction, fabrication of claims, hostile schemes, and more. Each has different indicators and requires different countermeasures. Keep an eye on the 'Intrigue' tab for notifications about active schemes targeting you or your realm.
Counter-Scheming
The 'Intrigue' menu allows you to initiate your own schemes. If you know who is plotting against you, you can attempt to 'Murder' them, 'Fabricate a Hook' on them to force compliance, or even 'Discredit' them to reduce their standing and influence.
Personal Intrigue Skill
Your character's own Intrigue skill is paramount. A high Intrigue score not only makes your own schemes more successful but also increases your 'Scheme Resistance,' making you harder to target. Investing in the Intrigue lifestyle can be incredibly beneficial for rulers who face constant threats.
Hooks and Secrets
Use your Spymaster to 'Find Secrets' in counties. Discovering secrets can yield valuable 'Hooks' that you can use to blackmail vassals into compliance, force them to disband factions, or even convert their religion. This is a powerful tool for maintaining control without resorting to direct conflict.
Vigilance and Awareness
Always be aware of who your rivals are and what their motivations might be. A character with a strong negative opinion of you, or one who stands to gain significantly from your demise, is a prime candidate for plotting. Regularly review your vassals and neighboring rulers to identify potential threats.
Dealing with Successful Schemes
If a scheme is successful, don't despair. If you are murdered, ensure your heir is well-prepared to take the throne and immediately begin investigating who was responsible. If a claim is fabricated against you, prepare your defenses and be ready to fight it off. The game is a constant cycle of action and reaction.
