Chancellor Guide
The Chancellor is one of your most versatile councilors, capable of influencing both your own realm and fore powers. Their primary role is to foster good relations, but their duties extend far beyond simple diplomacy. A skilled Chancellor can be instrumental in expanding your borders peacefully, securing alliances, and even destabilizing your rivals.
Primary Task: Improve Relations
- Assigning your Chancellor to "Improve Relations" in a county within your realm will boost the opinion of the local feudal lords towards you. This is crucial for preventing factions from forming and for increasing tax and levy contributions. Focus on counties with low opinion or those belonging to powerful vassals.
- If you have a fore ruler with whom you wish to improve relations (perhaps for an alliance or to prevent an invasion), you can ass your Chancellor to "Improve Fore Relations" in their capital. This is a slower process but can be vital for long-term strategic goals.
Other Tasks:
- Fabricate Claim: This is arguably the Chancellor's most powerful offensive ability. By assigning them to "Fabricate Claim" on a county, they will slowly work towards generating a claim for you. The success rate and speed depend heavily on your Chancellor's Diplomacy skill and the target county's Intrigue. A fabricated claim allows you to declare a war for that territory without needing a strong casus belli.
- Support Vassal Claim: If one of your vassals has a claim on a county within your realm, your Chancellor can help them press it. This can be useful for consolidating your own territory or for rewarding a loyal vassal.
- Stir Up Dissent: This is a more aggressive option that can destabilize a fore realm. While it doesn't directly benefit you, it can weaken a rival, making them easier to conquer later or distracting them from your own machinations.
Choosing Your Chancellor: Prioritize high Diplomacy. Perks from the Diplomacy lifestyle, such as "A Job Done Right" and "Diplomatic Immunity," can significantly enhance their effectiveness. Also, consider traits that boost opinion or reduce stress, as a happy Chancellor is a more productive Chancellor.
