The symbols of your authority and lineage, Crowns and Regalia in Crusader Kings III are more than just cosmetic. They represent your right to rule and can bestow significant bonuses upon your character and realm. These artifacts are often tied to your culture, religion, and historical achievements. For instance, a newly crowned King might receive a simple circlet, while an Emperor who has conquered vast swathes of land could aspire to possess the legendary Crown of Charlemagne, granting substantial prestige and opinion bonuses.
Acquiring these prestigious items often involves specific actions. You might forge a new crown through the 'Forge Artifact' decision, provided you have the necessary crafting skill and wealth. Alternatively, powerful crowns can be inherited, discovered through events, or even claimed through conquest. The quality and rarity of a crown directly influence its associated bonuses. A common Iron Crown might offer a small boost to martial skill, while a jeweled Golden Crown could provide significant increases to diplomacy and dread.
The 'Artifacts' interface, accessible from your character's portrait, is where you can view, equip, and manage all your regalia. Equipping a crown is a simple click, and its effects are immediately applied. Pay attention to the artifact's description; it will detail the specific buffs it provides, such as increased monthly prestige, a bonus to your vassal's loyalty, or even a reduction in stress gain. Some crowns are unique and can only be held by one ruler at a time, making them highly coveted prizes. Consider the needs of your current ruler and realm when choosing which crown to equip. A ruler struggling with internal dissent might benefit more from a crown that boosts vassal opinion, while a warlike conqueror might prefer one that enhances their military prowess.
