Intrigue Schemes

The Intrigue lifestyle in Crusader Kings III is where secrets are whispered, daggers are drawn, and the very fabric of power is manipulated from the shadows. Mastering intrigue allows you to achieve your goals through less direct, often more devastating, means than open warfare or diplomacy.

Types of Schemes

There are several core types of intrigue schemes you can initiate:

  • Murder Scheme: The most direct and often most impactful. The goal is to assassinate a target. Success depends on your Intrigue skill, the number of co-conspirators, and the target's "Scheme Resistance." High resistance can be found in characters with high Intrigue or specific traits like "Wary."
  • Abduction Scheme: Aims to capture a target, holding them for ransom or to force them into compliance. This can be a less lethal way to neutralize a threat or gain leverage.
  • Seduction Scheme: Used to initiate a romantic relationship with a target, often with the goal of gaining leverage, creating a strong alliance through marriage, or even producing illegitimate heirs.
  • Fabricate Hook Scheme: Designed to uncover secrets or blackmail targets, granting you a "Hook" on them. Hooks can be used to force vassals to agree to your demands, make characters accept unfavorable marriages, or even force them to join your schemes.
  • Destabilize Realm Scheme: A more complex scheme that aims to sow dissent and unrest within a target's realm, potentially leading to civil wars or factional uprisings.

Initiating & Managing Schemes

To initiate a scheme, you'll navigate to the target character's character screen and select the "Start Scheme" option. You can then choose the type of scheme and invite co-conspirators from your court or realm. The success chance is displayed, along with factors that influence it. It's crucial to have a spymaster with high Intrigue to assist you; their "Support Schemes" task is vital for increasing your success chance and reducing the risk of discovery.

Scheme Discovery & Consequences

Schemes are inherently risky. If a scheme is discovered before it's completed, you can face severe consequences, including imprisonment, loss of prestige, and a significant drop in opinion with the target and their allies. The "Scheme Discovery Chance" is a key metric to monitor. Characters with high Intrigue or the "Wary" trait are harder to scheme against. Conversely, characters with low Intrigue or traits like "Trusting" are easier targets.
