Setting Up a Multiplayer Game
Multiplayer in Crusader Kings III offers a dynamic and often chaotic experience, allowing you to forge alliances, wage wars, and scheme against friends or strangers. Setting up a game is straightforward, but understanding the options available will help you create the best possible experience.
To start a multiplayer game, navigate to the main menu and select "Multiplayer." Here, you'll have two primary options: "Host Game" or "Join Game."
Hosting a Game:
- Game Name: Give your game a descriptive name so others can easily find it.
- Password: If you want to restrict access to friends only, set a password.
- Max Players: Determine the total number of players the game will support.
- Game Settings: This is where you can customize various aspects of the game, including the starting date, game speed, and whether certain mechanics like Ironman mode are enabled. For a more casual experience, you might disable Ironman.
- Map: Select the starting map and date. The default 1066 start is popular, but you can choose other historical periods.
- Launch: Once configured, click "Launch" to start the server.
Joining a Game:
- Server List: You'll see a list of available games. You can filter this list by name, password requirement, and number of players.
- Connect: Select the game you wish to join and click "Connect." If a password is required, you'll be prompted to enter it.
In-Game Setup:
Once connected, you'll enter the character selection screen. Here, you can choose your starting ruler. Be aware that other players might have already selected desirable characters, so quick decision-making is often necessary. You can also see which characters are already taken. After selecting your character, you'll join the game and begin your multiplayer adventure.
Tips for Multiplayer:
- Communication: Use external voice chat (like Discord) for better coordination and roleplaying.
- Diplomacy: Alliances and rivalries with other players are a core part of the fun. Be prepared for betrayals and unexpected shifts in power.
- Pacing: Discuss with your fellow players the desired pace of the game. Some groups prefer rapid expansion, while others enjoy slower, more intricate dynastic play.
