Titles & Claims

Titles and claims are the bedrock of power and expansion in Crusader Kings III. Understanding how they work is essential for both consolidating your own rule and for pursuing your dynastic ambitions across the map. Titles represent ownership of land and authority, while claims are the legal justifications for demanding those titles, either through diplomacy or warfare.

Titles come in various tiers, from Duchies and Kingdoms to Empires. Holding a higher-tier title often grants you authority over lower-tier vassals. For example, a King has authority over Dukes and Counts within their Kingdom. Titles also have specific de jure (by law) borders, meaning that certain counties are legally considered part of a particular duchy or kingdom. Integrating these de jure territories into your realm is a key objective for many rulers, as it provides stability and reduces vassal opinion penalties. You can acquire titles through inheritance, conquest, fabrication, or by being granted them.

Claims are the legal basis for demanding a title. There are several ways to acquire claims. 'Fabricated Claims' can be generated by your Chancellor in a target county, with the success rate depending on their Diplomacy skill and the target's opinion of you. 'Inherited Claims' are passed down through your dynasty, often from a parent or grandparent who held a claim. 'De Jure Claims' are automatically held by rulers who are the de jure liege of a territory but do not currently hold the title. 'Strong Claims' are more powerful than 'Weak Claims' and can often be pressed regardless of the current holder's strength, whereas weak claims can only be pressed if the holder is sificantly weaker than you or is in a precarious situation. Once you have a claim, you can use the 'Press Claim' interaction. If the target refuses, this will initiate a war. Successfully winning a claim war grants you ownership of the disputed title and its associated lands.

Managing your titles and claims effectively is crucial. Ensure you hold the highest possible title you can manage without incurring sificant penalties (such as the 'Too Many Titles' penalty). Prioritize integrating de jure territories into your realm. Actively seek out and press claims on valuable titles, especially those that are de jure part of your existing kingdoms or empires. Consider using your Spymaster to 'Find Secrets' in a target's court, which can sometimes reveal hooks that allow you to force them to grant you claims or titles. The strategic acquisition and defense of titles, backed by strong claims, is the engine of dynastic growth in Crusader Kings III.
