Court Positions and Councilors

Managing your court and council effectively is paramount to the success and stability of your realm in Crusader Kings III. Your councilors are not merely figureheads; they are active agents who can execute schemes, improve your lands, and even lead your armies. Court positions, on the other hand, provide valuable bonuses and can help manage the opinions of powerful vassals and courtiers.

The Royal Council

Your Royal Council is comprised of five key positions, each requiring a character with high aptitude in a specific skill. To access your council, click the "Council" tab on the left-hand side of your screen. Always strive to fill these positions with characters possessing the highest possible relevant skill to maximize their effectiveness.

  • Chancellor (Diplomacy): The Chancellor is your realm's diplomat. Their primary tasks involve improving relations with vassals, fabricating claims on desired territories, and integrating de jure lands into your primary title.
    • Tasks:
      • Improve Diplomatic Relations: Target a specific vassal or foreign ruler to increase their opinion of you. Crucial for preventing factions and securing alliances.
      • Fabricate Claims: Send your Chancellor to a county you wish to conquer. The higher their Diplomacy skill, the faster they will generate a claim, and the higher the chance of a strong claim.
      • Integrate De Jure Duchy/Kingdom: If you hold the de jure liege title, your Chancellor can work to integrate a de jure territory into your realm, reducing opinion penalties from vassals within that territory.
    • Strategy: Prioritize fabricating claims on strategically important counties or those that complete a de jure duchy. Use "Improve Diplomatic Relations" on powerful, discontent vassals to prevent them from joining factions.
  • Marshal (Martial): The Marshal is your military commander and trainer. A strong Marshal is essential for raising powerful armies and maintaining order.
    • Tasks:
      • Organize Levies: Increases the size and quality of levies raised from your capital duchy. Essential for early game expansion.
      • Train Commanders: Improves the combat effectiveness of your knights and commanders.
      • Suppress Revolts: Reduces unrest and increases control in a chosen county, crucial for newly conquered territories or rebellious provinces.
    • Strategy: Always have your Marshal "Organize Levies" in your capital duchy unless you have a pressing need to "Suppress Revolts" in a particularly troublesome county.
  • Steward (Stewardship): The Steward manages your realm's economy and development. A high Stewardship Steward can significantly boost your income and development growth.
    • Tasks:
      • Collect Taxes: Increases the tax income from a chosen county.
      • Develop County: Increases the development growth in a chosen county, leading to higher taxes, levies, and technological progress over time.
      • Manage Royal Estates: Improves the income and control of your personal demesne.
    • Strategy: Early game, focus on "Develop County" in your capital to accelerate growth. Once your capital is well-developed, use "Collect Taxes" in high-income counties or "Manage Royal Estates" if you have a large demesne.
  • Spymaster (Intrigue): The Spymaster is your shadowy agent, capable of uncovering secrets and executing nefarious plots.
    • Tasks:
      • Scheme Power: Increases the success chance and power of your personal schemes.
      • Find Secrets: Sends your Spymaster to a chosen court to uncover secrets, which can be used for blackmail, hooks, or to expose rivals.
      • Disrupt Schemes: Reduces the success chance of hostile schemes targeting your character or your court.
    • Strategy: "Find Secrets" is incredibly powerful for generating hooks, which can be used to force characters to join schemes, marry, or pay taxes. Use "Disrupt Schemes" if you suspect a plot against you or a key family member.
  • Court Chaplain/Imam/Seer (Learning): This councilor manages religious affairs, converting provinces, and improving religious opinions.
    • Tasks:
      • Convert Faith: Attempts to convert a county to your faith, reducing religious opinion penalties and increasing control.
      • Improve Religious Relations: Increases the opinion of religious vassals and characters of your faith.
      • Study Theology: Increases your character's Learning skill and piety gain.
    • Strategy: "Convert Faith" is crucial for stabilizing newly conquered territories of a different religion. "Improve Religious Relations" can be useful if you have many powerful religious vassals.

Court Positions (Honorary Titles)

Beyond the council, your court can hold various honorary positions. These titles provide opinion bonuses to the holder and can be used to appease powerful vassals or reward loyal courtiers. To assign these, navigate to the "Court" tab and then the "Court Positions" sub-tab.

  • Steward: Not to be confused with the councilor, this honorary title grants a small Stewardship boost to the holder and improves their opinion.
  • Court Tutor: Assign to educate your children or other young courtiers. Look for characters with high Learning and positive traits.
  • Designated Regent: Crucial for succession planning. Choose a loyal and capable character to rule in your stead if your heir is a child.
  • Court Physician: A high Learning character with the "Physician" trait is invaluable for treating illnesses and injuries, potentially saving your character's life.
  • Royal Architect: Provides a small bonus to construction speed in your capital.
  • Court Poet/Artist/Musician: These roles primarily boost the holder's opinion and can contribute to court grandeur.
  • Bodyguard: A high Martial character who can protect you from assassination attempts.

Strategy for Court Positions: Always fill your Court Physician slot with the best available character. Use other honorary titles to grant opinion bonuses to powerful vassals who might otherwise join factions, or to reward family members and loyal courtiers. Be mindful of their traits; a greedy character might be insulted by a low-paying position, while an ambitious one might see it as a stepping stone.
