Advanced Artifact Management
Beyond simply equipping your best artifacts, true mastery in Crusader Kings III involves strategic acquisition, repair, and distribution to maximize your dynasty's power and prestige. This section delves into advanced techniques for managing your invaluable treasures.
Acquisition Strategies
While random events and successful wars often yield artifacts, proactive measures can significantly boost your collection.
- Commissioning Masterpieces: Once you have a court with high-skill artisans (especially those with the Diligent or Genius traits), leverage the "Commission Artifact" decision. Prioritize commissioning items that fill gaps in your current collection or provide specific bonuses your primary heir will benefit from. For example, if your heir is a formidable warrior, commissioning a Legendary Weapon like the Sword of Saint George (requires high Martial skill from the artisan) can be a game-changer.
- Targeted Raiding: As a tribal or Norse ruler, raiding isn't just for gold. Target realms known for their rich cultural heritage or powerful rulers. The "Sack Capital" raid option has a higher chance of yielding unique artifacts. Look for capitals of older empires or those with high development, as they often house more valuable items.
- Scheming for Relics: The "Steal Artifact" scheme, available through your Spymaster, is a potent tool. Focus on targets with unique, powerful artifacts that directly benefit your character or heir. For instance, if you need a strong learning boost, target characters holding the Book of Kells or similar scholarly tomes. Success chance is heavily influenced by your Spymaster's Intrigue skill and the target's security.
- Claiming via Inheritance: Keep a close eye on the inventories of your vassals and close family members. If a powerful artifact is held by someone likely to die without direct heirs, you might inherit it. Strategic assassinations (if you're playing an Intrigue character) can accelerate this process, though be mindful of the tyranny and opinion penalties.
Strategic Repair and Enhancement
Artifacts degrade over time and can be damaged in battle. Proper maintenance is crucial to retain their bonuses.
- The Court Artisan's Role: Your Court Artisan is paramount for artifact repair. A high-skill Artisan (especially with the Craftsman or Engineer lifestyle perks) will repair artifacts faster and with a lower chance of further damage. Always prioritize repairing your most valuable equipped artifacts first.
- Enhancement Opportunities: Certain artifacts, particularly weapons and armor, can be "enhanced" through special events or decisions. These often require significant gold or prestige but can permanently increase the artifact's quality and bonuses. For example, a "Masterwork" weapon might be upgraded to "Legendary" status after a successful campaign or a grand tournament.
- Artifact Quality and Durability: Pay attention to an artifact's quality (Common, Masterwork, Legendary) and durability. Legendary artifacts provide the strongest bonuses but are also the most expensive to repair. Durability affects how quickly an artifact degrades; a higher durability means fewer repairs are needed.
Optimizing Artifact Distribution
Don't hoard all your best artifacts on your primary character. Strategic distribution can strengthen your entire dynasty and realm.
- Heir Apparent: Ensure your primary heir has access to artifacts that bolster their weakest stats or complement their chosen lifestyle. A young heir with low Diplomacy might benefit greatly from the Crown of Charlemagne (+2 Diplomacy, +10 Opinion).
- Powerful Vassals: Gifting powerful artifacts to your most influential vassals can significantly improve their opinion of you, preventing factions and ensuring loyalty. Consider giving a strong martial vassal a high-quality weapon or armor. Be cautious, however, as powerful artifacts can also make them more formidable if they rebel.
- Spouse and Council Members: Equip your spouse with artifacts that boost their primary skill (e.g., a high-Intrigue spouse with an artifact like the Poisoned Dagger of the Serpent for scheme power). Similarly, council members can benefit from artifacts that enhance their council position's primary attribute. For instance, your Court Chaplain could use the Holy Book of the Prophet for increased Learning and Piety.
- Courtly Grandeur: Displaying high-quality artifacts in your court increases your Grandeur, which in turn boosts opinion and provides other benefits. Even if an artifact isn't actively equipped, its presence in your court contributes to your overall prestige. Regularly check your court inventory and ensure your most impressive items are on display.
