Enemy Types & Tactics

New York City is a warzone, and you'll face a diverse array of enemies, both human and alien, each requiring distinct tactical approaches. Understanding their strengths, weaknesses, and behaviors is crucial for survival in your Nanosuit.

C.E.L.L. Operatives (Human)

The private military contractors of C.E.L.L. are your initial human adversaries. While not as technologically advanced as the Ceph, they are numerous and well-equipped. Your Nanosuit's abilities give you a significant advantage, but complacency can be deadly.

C.E.L.L. Grunts

  • Description: Standard infantry, typically armed with SCARAB assault rifles or Feline submachine guns. They wear light armor.
  • Tactics:
    • Stealth Approach: Engage Cloak Mode (Q on PC, L1 on PS3/Xbox 360) to flank them. A stealth melee takedown (V on PC, R3 on PS3/Xbox 360) is a silent and efficient kill.
    • Direct Engagement: In Power Mode (E on PC, R1 on PS3/Xbox 360), their light armor offers little resistance to headshots. use cover effectively.
    • Environmental Kills: Look for explosive barrels or unstable structures. Shooting these can take out multiple grunts simultaneously.

C.E.L.L. Heavy Troopers

  • Description: More heavily armored than grunts, often wielding the K-Volt SMG or the powerful L-TAG grenade launcher. They can absorb more damage.
  • Tactics:
    • Armor Piercing Rounds: If available, switch to armor-piercing ammunition for your SCARAB or Grendel.
    • Explosives: Frag Grenades (G on PC, R2 on PS3/Xbox 360) are highly effective. Aim for their feet to bypass frontal armor.
    • Flanking & Weak Points: Their back armor is often weaker. Use Cloak to get behind them for critical hits.
    • L-TAG Threat: If they have an L-TAG, prioritize them. Their grenades can quickly deplete your Nanosuit energy.

C.E.L.L. Snipers

  • Description: Positioned in elevated, advantageous locations, armed with the DSG-1 sniper rifle. They can inflict heavy damage from a distance.
  • Tactics:
    • Identify & Prioritize: Use your Nano-Vision (Z on PC, Up D-Pad on PS3/Xbox 360) to spot their laser sights. They are a high-priority target.
    • Cloak & Flank: Cloak and move to a position where you can get a clear shot.
    • Counter-Sniping: If you have a DSG-1 or a high-powered scope on another weapon, engage them directly. Aim for headshots.
    • Avoid Open Areas: Do not linger in open spaces when snipers are present.

Ceph (Alien)

The Ceph are the primary antagonists, an alien race with advanced technology and formidable combat capabilities. They come in various forms, each presenting a unique challenge.

Ceph Grunts (Stalkers)

  • Description: The most common Ceph unit, agile and aggressive. They attack in packs and can quickly close distances.
  • Tactics:
    • Area of Effect: Their speed makes them difficult to hit individually. Use weapons with a high rate of fire like the Feline or shotguns like the Jackal.
    • Explosives: Frag Grenades or the L-TAG can thin out groups effectively.
    • Power Melee: A Power Melee attack can instantly kill a Stalker, especially useful when they get too close.
    • Energy Management: They drain your Nanosuit energy if they hit you with their energy attacks. Keep an eye on your energy bar.

Ceph Heavies (Guardians)

  • Description: Large, heavily armored Ceph units that wield powerful energy weapons. They are slow but can absorb immense damage.
  • Tactics:
    • Weak Points: Their glowing orange core is their critical weakness. Focus fire on this area.
    • Explosives & Heavy Weapons: Rockets from the JAW or grenades are excellent for stripping their armor and exposing their core.
    • Flanking: Use Cloak to get behind them and target their back, which is often less armored.
    • Avoid Direct Confrontation: Do not stand in front of a Guardian for extended periods; their energy blasts are devastating.

Ceph Prowlers

  • Description: Fast, four-legged Ceph that can quickly traverse environments and pounce on you. They are often encountered in groups.
  • Tactics:
    • Situational Awareness: Listen for their distinctive growls and watch for movement in your periphery.
    • Shotguns & SMGs: Close-range weapons are effective due to their speed. The Jackal shotgun can one-shot them at close range.
    • Power Stomp: If a Prowler gets too close, a Power Stomp (jump + crouch in Power Mode) can knock them back or kill them.
    • Environmental Traps: use narrow corridors or choke points to funnel them, making them easier targets.

Ceph Devastators

  • Description: Massive, heavily armored Ceph that serve as mini-bosses. They possess powerful ranged and melee attacks.
  • Tactics:
    • Rocket Launchers (JAW): The JAW is your best friend against Devastators. Aim for their glowing weak points, typically on their chest or back.
    • Explosive Barrels: If available, lure them near explosive objects and detonate them.
    • Hit and Run: Use Cloak to reposition and avoid their heavy attacks. Fire a few shots, then re-cloak and move.
    • Focus Fire: Concentrate all available firepower on their weak points. Sustained damage is key.

Ceph Stalkers (Advanced)

  • Description: Later in the game, you'll encounter more advanced Stalkers with enhanced armor and abilities. They may have shields or more potent energy attacks.
  • Tactics:
    • Shield Bypass: If they have shields, aim for exposed body parts or wait for the shield to drop during their attack animation.
    • EMP Grenades: EMP grenades can temporarily disable their shields and energy attacks, leaving them vulnerable.
    • Adaptive Combat: Don't rely on a single strategy. Adapt your weapon choice and Nanosuit mode based on their current behavior.
