Boss: Guardian Dragon
The Guardian Dragon, found within Aldia's Keep, is a formidable airborne foe that guards the path to the Dragon Aerie. This boss fight takes place on a circular platform, and understanding its fiery attacks and aerial maneuvers is key to victory.
Pre-Fight Preparation
- Equipment:
- Fire Resistance: The Guardian Dragon primarily deals fire damage. Equip armor with high fire defense (e.g., Smelter Demon Set, Havel's Set if infused with fire defense), and consider the Flame Quartz Ring +1 or +2.
- Shield: A shield with high fire resistance (e.g., Gyrm Greatshield, Rebel's Greatshield) can block some of its breath attacks.
- Weapon Type: Strike damage is moderately effective, but any well-upgraded weapon will suffice. Consider a ranged option for when it takes to the air.
- Consumables:
- Estus Flasks: Maximize your Estus Flask uses and upgrade them at Majula.
- Lifegems: For passive healing during longer engagements.
- Brightbug: For a temporary damage boost.
- Summons: There are no readily available NPC summons for this fight.
Boss Attacks and Strategy
The Guardian Dragon has a predictable moveset, but its fire attacks can be devastating. The key is to stay close and exploit openings.
- Fire Breath (Ground):
- Description: The dragon will rear its head back and unleash a cone of fire directly in front of it.
- Strategy: If you are close, roll under its head towards its legs or tail. If you are at a distance, sprint to either side to get out of the cone.
- Fire Breath (Aerial):
- Description: The dragon will fly into the air and either sweep the arena with fire or target a specific area.
- Strategy: When it takes flight, immediately sprint towards the edge of the arena and keep rolling to avoid the sweeping fire. If it targets a specific spot, roll away from the impact zone. This is a good opportunity for ranged attacks if you have them.
- Tail Swipe:
- Description: If you are behind the dragon, it may perform a quick tail swipe.
- Strategy: Roll through the tail or block if your shield has high stability.
- Bite/Head Slam:
- Description: If you are directly in front of its head, it might attempt a bite or a head slam.
- Strategy: Roll to the side. These attacks are less common if you stay near its legs.
- Stomp:
- Description: If you are under its feet, it may stomp.
- Strategy: Roll away from the foot that is lifting.
General Tactics
- Stay Close: The safest place to be is often directly underneath or beside its legs. This minimizes the effectiveness of its fire breath attacks.
- Target Legs/Tail: Focus your attacks on its legs or the base of its tail. These are often the easiest targets to hit safely.
- Punish Landings: When the dragon lands after an aerial attack, it often has a brief recovery period. Use this window to get in a few hits.
- Ranged Options: If you're a spellcaster or archer, you can deal significant damage while it's airborne, but be mindful of its aerial fire breath.
- Patience: Don't get greedy with your attacks. Get a few hits in, then be ready to roll or reposition.
Reward
Upon defeating the Guardian Dragon, you will receive the Soul of Guardian Dragon and 18,000 souls (NG). This soul can be traded with Straid of Olaphis for the Spitfire Spear.
A bonfire, the Dragon Aerie bonfire, will appear on the platform after the fight, allowing you to proceed to the next area.
